Position Function:

This position, within the Forest & Wildlife Research Center (FWRC), will manage and perform a variety of tasks in support of the research, teaching, demonstration, recreation, and revenue functions of university forestlands and facilities.

Salary Grade: 14

Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges. For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Anticipated Appointment Date:

July 2024.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assist in managing forest operations on supported forestlands and coordinate these activities to meet the objectives as needed for each property and ensure compliance with Mississippi Best Management Practices (BMP's) and forestland certification programs.

2. Manage inventory data collection, data input, and standing data on lands managed by Forest Operations.

3. Coordinate regeneration operations including site preparation, planting, release, and survival audits

4. Assist in management of timber sales including stand layout and preparation, document preparation, bid coordination, and oversite of harvest activities and BMP work

5. Assist in coordination of maintenance of roads, property lines, signage, gates, and locks

6. Assist with prescribed fire planning and implementation

7. Manage recreational activities and related facilities on forestlands. Oversee the issuance of hunting/trapping and special use permits and the maintenance of Dorman Lake Lodge and the John W. Starr Memorial Forest RV Park.

8. Support the functions of Forest Operations and assist with duties as assigned. Coordinate and/or support special projects and events such as tours, field days, student labs etc.

9. Maintain professional certifications and associations ensuring continuing educations requirements are met.

10. Supervise the work and safety of student, part time, and intermittent workers.

11. Assist with upkeep of the Forest and Wildlife Research Center and the College of Forest Resources buildings and grounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Forestry or related discipline.

Experience: 1 year - supervisory experience.

Licensures:

* Possession of a valid driver's license.

* Prescribed Burn Manager certificate or ability to obtain within six months.

* Mississippi Registered Forester or ability to obtain within six months.

Substitution: An equivalent combination of related education and related experience may be considered for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least 2 years of experience in forestry with similar duties and responsibilities as stated above

Excellent GIS/GPS skills utilizing modern forestry inventory systems

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with university officials, alumni, friends, and various constituencies of FWRC.

Strong computing background with demonstrated experience in applying technology to achieve productivity.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Job frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Job occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting more than 100 pounds.

Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals,
