WHO YOU ARE?

At AGU we are looking for individuals who want to learn something new every day, who welcome a challenge, and are motivated to achieve results in a fast-paced environment. You will be a proactive and creative problem solver who enjoys collaborating across diverse teams.

You will focus on grassroots advocacy, a key part of AGU's mission to help our members take their science from usable to used. You will understand the legislative process in the US, or a strong interest in learning about this process. You will share a desire in helping scientists better understand what the role of science is in the policy process, and how scientists can get involved. You will share an interest for connecting with scientists passionate about sharing their research with policymakers and the public.

You will possess a passion for Earth and space sciences consistent with the goals of AGU and demonstrate a keen interest in science policy.

WHAT YOU WILL DO?

You will gain firsthand, practical experience advancing Earth and space science policy with an exciting, dynamic team. You will help U.S. Federal agencies, Congress, our community of over 130,000 scientists across the globe, and others by working with us to promote science through policy.

  • Aid in AGU's grassroots campaigns, helping connect our members with their legislators. You will learn campaign building, strategy, marketing, tracking, and follow up. You may draft tweets for campaigns, including promotional tweets and tweets sent to members of congress with campaign information.
  • Produce content and maintain the Science Policy and Government Relations social media presence (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.), helping our membership stay up to date on the latest science policy news.
  • Produce content for AGU's science policy blog, The Bridge. Interns will have the opportunity to dive deeper into a science policy topic of their choosing and develop skills writing for broader audiences under the guidance of AGU staff.
  • Help coordinate and execute major initiatives like science policy workshops, Congressional visits events, and Congressional briefings to bring critical science policy info directly to our membership.


WHAT YOU WILL BRING?

  • 2+years of coursework towards a bachelor's degree in Earth or space sciences. A Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Earth or space science is a plus.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional interpersonal skills.
  • Experience to manage multiple projects on a tight deadline.
  • Organizational and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), internet browsers, and web search engines.
  • Experience with social media, science policy, and science communication, preferred but not required.


HIRING SPECIFICS

  • Full Time/ Non Exempt, 3 month Summer 2024 Internship, remote in many US States. We are not hiring in WA, OR and CA at this time.
  • Pay is $17.00 per hour.
