GENERAL SUMMARY (What is done and why.)

The candidate chosen will be responsible for serving the needs of Green Mountain Power customers. This position will primarily focus on the collection of delinquent payments from customers when payment is linked to a customer arrears notice or disconnect order. The candidate may also be asked to support reading and recording data from all types of meters and associated devices in assigned routes while monitoring and reporting meter conditions, creating and following through on trouble orders relating to meters or reads. Work is varied in nature and will require travel outside of the assigned "home" base district to assist in other districts. Must follow Company safety standards and practices and be compliant in the proper use of personal protective equipment required to perform work. Incumbent applies working knowledge of basic electricity principles and technologies to work performed. Works under limited supervision and in compliance with established policies, procedures and regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Majority of duties, but not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned as necessary.)

  • Responsible for field related collections activity with a strong emphasis on reducing outstanding accounts receivable.
  • Effectively operates various computer software systems and navigates all applications routinely used in Meter Operations.
  • Responsible for obtaining scheduled meter readings.
  • Originates investigation of energy diversion, potential safety hazards and other abnormal conditions (e.g., broken seals, tampering, malfunctions, and incorrect meter #or meter multiplier).
  • Monitors meters to ensure a comprehensive and secure meter seal program.
  • Maintains and transfers district meter inventory to and from the general meter stock location.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (Minimum education, experience, technical and communication skill levels and licenses/certificates normally required to perform the duties of this position.)
  • Advanced math skills
  • Working knowledge of electricity as it applies to both single and poly phase metering. Will be required to take and pass the Basic Electricity Course administered by the Company.
  • Basic PC skills
  • Demonstrated ability to walk 4 miles per hour without physical stress.
  • Moderate oral and interpersonal skills with ability to communicate with customers in a clear and courteous manner.
  • Valid Vermont driver's license with a driving record adequate for insurability.


This level of knowledge is normally acquired through completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.

WORKING CONDITIONS (Typical working conditions associated with this type of work and environmental hazards, if any that may be encountered in performing the duties of this position.)

Internal Work - is performed, on a limited basis, in climate controlled office environment, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gases is very limited. Noise level is moderate and includes sounds of normal office equipment (computers, telephones, etc.). Length of day is unpredictable; long hours may be required to accommodate peak periods, customer availability and staffing emergencies.

External Work - is performed extensively where there is exposure to outside atmospheric conditions or heat/cold or moisture, over all types of terrain and exposure to traffic while performing meter reading and repair functions. Work involves potential exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., aggressive dogs, disgruntled customers, poisonous plants, etc.).

Special - Occasionally work requires scheduled and unscheduled overtime and incumbent will be expected to participate in and have an active role during storm restoration.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS (The physical effort generally associated with this position.) Work involves standing and walking for extended periods of time; limited duties are performed from a seated position. Work routinely includes pushing, pulling, or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, such as meters, tools and test equipment. Will be required to drive a 4 x 4 vehicle during inclement weather conditions and enter and exit the vehicle numerous times per day. Deadlines, disgruntled customers, workloads during peak periods and pressure to achieve goals may cause increased stress levels. Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate hand-held device and computer keyboard.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS/CONTACTS (Positions, other than supervisor and immediate co-workers, with which incumbent has frequent contact and the reason for contact.)

Internal - Periodic contact with customer service and credit & collection representatives to address specific customer concerns or requests; contact with T & D Operations personnel. Occasional contact with vehicle maintenance to schedule vehicle maintenance and repairs.

External - Frequent contact with customers to obtain or provide information needed to perform the duties of the position.

Supervision of Others - N/A

ACCOUNTABILITY (Budget/asset amount managed, revenues/profits produced, and/or other financial resource incumbent is accountable for. Also indicates judgment/decision-making level.) This position is responsible for achieving individual production goals. Accuracy and attention to detail is required.

Standard Work Hours (7 AM-3:30 PM)

Full-time- Five days per week -8 hours per day plus necessary overtime

Scheduling within these hours will be management's responsibility.

This is a seasonal temporary position lasting no longer than 1040 hours inclusive of overtime. The employee hired will be required to join the union after 30 days.
