The Department of Mail Services in Procurement, Contracting and Payment Services at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Postal Worker II.

As a Postal Worker II, you will work in a team environment to provide university-wide mission critical mail and postal services, satisfying all customer needs and to perform all duties and tasks associated with the University Postal Service operation.

What you'll do:
  • Maintains mail flow for the entire institution through campus mail, U.S. mail, registered mail, priority mail, bulk mail, 2nd class mail, certified mail, insured mail, international mail, express mail, and third party express mail and parcel services (e.g. UPS, FedEx), by employing automated tracking systems and receiving, sorting, logging, checking security, transporting cash, receiving and delivering, in a timely fashion, all types and classes of mail according to established procedures and federal, state and local regulations.
  • Provides on demand customer service for all WVU Departments by processing all outgoing classes of metered mail, verifying departmental postage account numbers, affixing proper postage, accurately recording postage transactions, and proficiently operating automated mailing equipment and mail accounting systems.
  • Provides on demand customer service for all WVU students, faculty and staff by receiving, weighing, metering, checking security, sorting, maintaining records, and accurately distributing and forwarding all classes of mail, including campus mail, U.S. mail of all classes, and third party express mail and parcels, to the proper campus locations and individual student mail boxes where applicable.
  • Continuously cross-trains on all Postal Service work stations and actively train students, temporary workers, co-workers and new hires. Maintains and expands job knowledge by using training materials, attending educational workshops and cross-training in specific tasks of all team members. Assures quality customer service by following procedures, enforcing best business practices, documenting events, making suggestions for improvements, communicating with coworkers, and asking for customer feedback.
  • Maintains office communications by answering the department telephones, taking messages, directing calls, answering caller questions, greeting visitors in person, and providing information to unit customers. Arranges for post office vehicle maintenance and maintains the work area. Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related results as needed and performs other duties as assigned by team supervisors. Positions within this area participate in several institutional processes as needed which may require limited amounts of evening and weekend hours.
Work Hours: Monday - Friday 7a-3p

Pay Grade: 9 WVU provides competitive wages for its employees, and takes experience and related education into consideration when determining appropriate salary.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Six (6) months experience in the following:
    • Customer service
    • Mail operations, preferred
    • Driving routes and making deliveries, preferred
  • Able to gain comprehensive knowledge of Federal, State, and Local postage and U.S.P.S. regulations and procedures. Knowledge of International Mailing requirements.
  • Advanced ability to operate office equipment such as personal computers, complex automated tracking and delivery systems, computerized mailing machines, postage meters, photocopiers, FAX machines, binders, and filing systems.
  • Ability to proficiently perform all the tasks and responsibilities of the all various Mail Services Work Stations.
  • Strong knowledge of Customer Service standards and departmental procedures.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and work situations simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated customer skills and the ability to interact with personnel both inside and outside the WVU community.
  • Ability to work independently, exercising judgment, tact and diplomacy in interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a high volume, fast paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Above average oral and written skills, with the ability to reason and apply practical, thoughtful and sound judgment to solve operational problems.
  • Must be able to safely operate and drive a mail truck to make deliveries across campus, including routine maintenance and driving in all weather conditions.

  • Valid driver's license
  • Physical demands include:
    • Incumbent works in a high-volume office environment. Few periods of sitting exist, however, there is discretion concerning timing and frequency of standing, walking, etc. daily.
    • Physical effort is required involving stooping, bending, and lifting and transporting of mail bags, mail trays, sorting racks, and parcels daily.
    • Must walk up and down stairs and drive a mail truck daily.
