Nature of Work

The School Nutrition Compliance Specialist trains and assists the School Nutrition Managers and staff while implementing various aspects of the School Nutrition program. An employee in this class receives general direction from the SNS Director, while providing support to the SNS Director. The employee exercises discretionary judgment within board policies and procedures. The employee may have limited supervision responsibilities with site managers. The employee reports to the Director of School Nutrition.

Qualifications

? Bachelor's degree in Food Service Management, Nutrition, Business, or a related field is preferred

? Four to six years of experience in food service management with a focus on the USDA National

School Lunch Program

? Any combination of the aforementioned education and experience

? Must have thorough knowledge of HACCP, federal/state laws

? Must be or willing to obtain ServSafe certification

Duties and Responsibilities

? Provide training for all managers and employees in HACCP

? Review all HACCP manuals and keep current on policies

? Inspect all kitchens and dining areas to evaluate for repairs and equipment needs to meet all

state/federal guidelines and report back to the Director

? Monitor cafeteria health inspection reports to identify any problems or deficiencies and implement

action for improvement in these areas

? Serve as a mentor and communication link to encourage managers to request assistance when

needed and to provide the direction for them to identify resources

? Develop, through team decisions, the programs and systems for preparing and delivering quality

meals and gracious customer service

? Provide on-site leadership to managers and employees

? Ensure all cafeteria operations are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws, policies,

guidelines, and procedures

? Observe and make recommendations to the Director concerning routine and non-routine personnel

matters affecting assignment of staff members

? Assess and recommend proper staffing

? Assess and recommend procedures to streamline productivity and improve quality control

? Lead managers to establish effective communication with principals, faculty, staff, and parents to

provide excellent customer service

? Establish and maintain effective communication with school principals and other departments within

the district, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders

? Actively participate in the conduction of manager meetings with the Director to disburse and gather

information meant to increase the efficiency of individual cafeteria sites and improve effectiveness

? Give input in the development of SN protocols to ensure employees successfully complete their job

responsibilities

? Attend seminars, workshops, conferences, classes, lectures, association and professional meetings,

etc., as appropriate to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in the field of

School Nutrition and food service industries.

? Train all managers on recipe usage and the documentation required

? Train employees on food production records and then evaluate the compliance at each school site to

ensure mandated regulations are being met

? Train all employees on safety in food preparation

? Monitor appropriate department data to ensure proper protocols are being followed and gain insight

into areas where additional training is needed

? Maintain a constant check of safety standards and implement corrections when needed

? Conduct and document on-site reviews at each school location and report back to the Director

? Interface with managers to keep the Point of Sale database running smoothly and free of duplicates

or errors

? Implement promotions and coordinate nutrition education as part of the school curriculum and

provide the training needed to employees

? Serve as a nutrition education resource

? Assure a positive atmosphere and image of School Nutrition at all times

? Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Director, rules and regulations of the

Department of Public Instruction, the State Board of Education, and the USDA Food and Nutrition

Service

Skills and Abilities

? Working knowledge of requirements of federal, state, and local agencies governing School Nutrition

programs.

? Knowledge of the principles of sound nutrition, special diets, food safety, quality quantity food

production, fiscal responsibility, business ethics, equipment use and care, and all requirements of CN

programs

? Ability to implement requirements, maintain accurate records and to communicate and work

effectively with others. Ability to provide diet instruction to managers and their staff. Knowledge of

principles of nutrition, food safety, quality/ quantity food production, fiscal responsibility, business

ethics and equipment use and care.

? Demonstrate positive attitude, sound leadership/role modeling skills at all times.

? Has a working knowledge of computer applications and software programs integral to the SN

department; Meals Plus is recommended.

? Competent in Google applications
