The University of Iowa Community Clinics (UICC) is seeking a patient centered Medical Assistant Program Instructor to support our growing Medical Assistant Program. This position providing high-quality classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction to the students enrolled in the UIHC Hospital based medical assistant certificate program. Teaching assignments may include days and evenings and various sites and formats (face to face, on-line, zoom). Students are prepared in a variety of settings including the laboratory environment, clinical settings, and classrooms at the HSSB, Scott Blvd (locations subject to change).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Classroom Instruction
  • Delivers course work as it applies to the appropriate UIHC MA Program curriculum.
  • Utilizes contemporary teaching strategies and practices.
  • Hold conferences with students on an as needed basis to provide actionable, individualized feedback on learning activities and assignments.
  • Follows and enforces Student Guidelines
  • Maintains classroom.
  • Enter the classroom at the designated time with all necessary materials. Class begins and ends at scheduled times and follows scheduled student break times.
  • Monitors class retention rates and actively participates to promote student retention to exceed UIHC MA Program standards.
  • Outside of Class Time
  • Review UIHC MA Program curriculum and prepare for class instruction.
  • Corrects student assignments and tests and accurately record grades in a timely manner.
  • Cooperates with lab schedules, maintains weekly office hour(s) and assists with coverage when needed.
  • Completes curriculum training in advance of each module instruction.
  • Completion of a minimum of one pre-approved professional development workshop, seminar or course related to the teaching discipline of the instructor every fiscal year
  • Attends formal and informal faculty/staff meetings.
  • Informs Program Director immediately of unsatisfactory academic student progress, discipline or attitude problems, and occurrences that warrant discussion.
  • Attends and actively participates in instructor meetings.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching:
  • Empower students to develop competency by sharing a passion and expertise for the medical assistant profession and its competencies and skills.
  • Utilize technology-based teaching platforms including Zoom; a web-conferencing technology, and Canvas Learning Management System.
  • Employ instructional methods and materials that are appropriate for meeting stated objectives, assessing accomplishments of students on a regular basis, and providing progress reports as requested and required.
  • Promote student success with a proactive, high-expectations, high-support approach:
  • Identify gaps between student needs and existing resources and services; generate creative resolutions.
  • Maintain consistent, regular student support activities, through one-on-one check-ins, regular email communication, and office hours.
  • Evaluate students based on MAERB core competency requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Keep student records updated according to expected guidelines.
  • Be prepared, yet flexible.
  • Be empathetic, yet structured.
  • Differentiate instruction and support based on student needs.

Schedule:

Location: Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of clinical education and experience.

Experience Requirements
  • One of the following: RN license, Paramedic or CMA certification.
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of job-related experience
  • Current certification (must maintain while teaching) must maintain CPR, First Aid, and Mandatory Reporter Certificates.
  • Current knowledge of medical procedures, terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and medical billing and coding.
  • Ability to teach and provide instruction in a classroom or clinical setting.
  • Job related experience in the work environment is required.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with students and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage lesson plans and student records.
  • Adaptability to adjust teaching style to meet the needs of varied learners.
  • Adhere to UIHC Medical Assistant Program Code of Conduct and Professional Ethics
  • Participate in instructional professional development.

Highly Desired Qualifications
  • Two - Five years of teaching experience with knowledge of course development, instruction, evaluation, and academic advising. Online teaching experience is also desired.
  • Previous teaching/education experience in a medical setting.

Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of teaching experience with knowledge of course development, instruction, evaluation, and academic advising.
  • Online teaching experience.
  • Experience with digital tools for teaching, teaching in either online or blended/hybrid formats, and teaching to students of varying backgrounds and abilities strongly preferred.
  • Previous teaching/education experience.
  • Previous recent Lead Medical Assistant experience.
  • Previous preceptor experience.
