General Description

OPEN UNTIL FILLED
This position involves skilled work maintaining and repairing equipment related to lift station, wastewater, water, and reuse systems and may perform any combination of the functions below. Performs work under general supervision.

This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply.

Primary Duties

  • METERS: Maintains and calibrates meter testing equipment. Reads meters. Calculates water usage for new constructions sites. Maintains, tests, and troubleshoots meters. Installs and changes out water meters, reuse meters, and cross connection devices. Maintains meter inventory; packs and ships warranty related items. Maintains meter records and updates supervisor on testing progress
  • HYDRANTS: Performs routine maintenance on fire hydrants per American Water Works Association (AWWA) and City standards. Checks appearance of hydrants; power washes and scrapes off old paint; applies multiple coats of paint; and adjusts height of hydrant appropriately to ground surface. Flushes hydrants; exercises valves; performs pressure and flow tests of fire hydrants; opens up and checks for leaks; checks threads and lubricates; checks condition of gaskets, chains, and bolts; and oils as needed; Makes sure hydrants are properly marked.
  • LOCATING UNDERGROUND UTILITIES: Drives to work sites. Locates and marks underground utilities including water, waste, and cable at assigned sites. Reads maps, interpreting blueprints, using a metal detector, and/or digging. Discusses results with contractors, homeowners, and/or landscapers .Maintains, fuels, and cleans work truck.
  • WORKORDERS: Disconnects and reconnects utilities. Troubleshoots for leaks; identifies repair needed.
  • LIFTSTATION MAINTENANCE: Performs repairs and maintenance on lift station infrastructure including pumps, pipes, and electrical panels. Checks wet wells. Maintains landscaping such as: mowing, spraying weeds, trimming hedges, edging, and trimmings trees. Maintains buildings such as: spraying for insects/ rodents; and painting. Paints parking lot stripes; and driver license course. Cleans up trash and debris. Reports any damage.
  • WATER, SEWER, and REUSE MAINS: Locates sewer, water, and reuse mains. Cuts up cement where necessary. Installs water service, mains, sewers, and reuse lines. Repairs breaks. Performs cleaning, repair, and maintenance on laterals, mains, and manholes.
  • EQUIPMENT: Operates various heavy and light equipment including backhoes, crane truck, dump trucks, etc. Runs large and small generators at sites. Troubleshoots and repairs heavy industrial, water, and wastewater processing equipment.
  • Surveys reclaim water customers to assure they are following guidelines.
  • Periodically does work orders for utility billing.
  • Performs heavy manual labor such as: digging, lifting, placing pipes, laying lines, and filling holes.
  • May train co-workers.
  • Completes work order paperwork and/or updates system status.
  • Maintains telephone service/communications and may be placed on emergency call outs. May be required to work rotating shifts, on call duties, and extended hours in emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • No experience required; prefer some experience in water and wastewater fields and/or experience in performing heavy manual labor.
  • Class "3" Distribution certification or obtain within one (1) years of hire.
  • Class "C" Collection certification or obtain within two (2) years of employment.
  • Prefer certified in confined space entry.
  • Prefer certified in Trenching and Excavation.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License
  • Obtain restricted Class "B" Commercial Florida Driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements within 90 days from date of hire.
  • Obtain Class "B" Commercial Florida Driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements within 180 days from date of hire.
  • Obtain FEMA IS100, IS700 within six (6) months from date of employment.
In some cases, an equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.
Essential Physical Functions & Environmental Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Continual light work and occasional heavy work.
  • Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
  • Requires frequent walking and standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, and bending.
  • Good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
  • Good eyesight, hearing, and speech.
  • Regular driving of vehicle.
  • Must be able to wear personal protection equipment (PPE).

Work Environment

Works outside sometimes in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., heat, cold, and rain) for moderate periods of time. Exposure to construction and water/wastewater site hazards, traffic, and moving machinery. Involves working with high voltage equipment, heights and below ground level conditions.
