SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: This class is responsible for installing/maintaining various metering equipment for the Public Works Commission. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, setting voltmeters, ammeters, and load boxes to identify problems; making connections/checking for voltage related problems; reconnecting/disconnecting metering services; working with Automated Meter Reading (AMR) units, and the Mobile Data Terminals (MDT's); installing/testing current transformers, voltage transformers, meters/related wiring; reading commercial/industrial meters; working from heights, working in confined spaces, working on or near energized electrical equipment, responding to customer complaints. Assist substation department with energized equipment in substations hooking or disconnecting equipment leads or other various duties as necessary. Operates under general supervision of the Senior Meter Service Technician, in accordance with established policies and procedures. Extended hours and on-call availability are required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures; good knowledge of methods/practices/procedures required to perform electric installation, and maintenance work; good knowledge of tools/equipment/materials; good knowledge of the AMR system; skill in installing/powering up, and programming AMR units; skill in testing/repairing meter services; skill in operating computers/mobile data terminals/ applicable software; ability to perform installation/maintenance work; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to develop and establish effective working relationships with customers, the general public, and all levels of employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of four (4) years of experience in the installation and maintenance of electric metering equipment or related experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess/maintain a valid North Carolina Class A or B (CDL) Driver's License. Functional Employment Test (FET).

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Manual/power tools, computer, mobile data terminals (MDT's), vehicle, bucket trucks, communication, meter test standards, CT service test equipment, and other equipment, as required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.

SAFETY HAZARDS: Inclement weather, fluctuating temperatures, electrical current, and other hazards associated with the repair of electric meters.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: As required in the Public Works Commission's Safety Manual.
