REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Nurse Manager of Surgery

GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager of Surgery. The Peri-operative Attendant's primary job function is to transport patients to and from the operating room; perform surgical clipper preps; assist in turn over of rooms between surgical procedures; assist in the terminal cleaning and stocking of operating room suites.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

* High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

* Certificate of completion of a Nursing Assistant program or equivalent experience required

Licensure:

* BLS within 90 days of hire required

Experience:

* Previous nurse assistant experience required.

Interpersonal Skills:

* Good interpersonal skills needed to interact with physicians, staff, patients, and families.

Essential Technical/Motor Skills:

* Ability to manipulate and clean surgical equipment as indicated. Clean and decontaminate patient area equipment.

Essential Physical Requirements:

* Sufficient mobility to stand 6 hours of shift. Ability to push patient carts. The physical demand level for this position is very heavy. Occasionally must lift in excess of 100 pounds and frequently carry 50 pounds or more when transporting, transferring, and positioning patients.

Essential Mental Requirements:

* Has a great deal of contact with the general public and other customers when transporting patients to other hospital locations and interacting with patient's families. Requires the ability to cope with deadlines and adjust to irregular schedules. Must frequently have the ability to concentrate and pay close attention to details when cleaning equipment.

Essential Sensory Requirements:

* Sufficient vision to perform duties and ability to understand instructions.

Exposure to Hazards:

* Works in sterile atmosphere with occasional exposure to excessive dust. Regular exposure to excessive noise and temperature. Exposure to sharp instruments and to bodily fluids with potential injury from needles or sharp instruments. Possible exposure to communicable or infectious diseases.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

1. Transport patients to and from the operating room.

2. Performs surgical clipper preps as indicated.

3. Maintains a clean environment and organization of surgical suites' supplies and equipment.

4. Assists other staff members in the timely turn-around of rooms between procedures.

5. May assist in the cleaning and sterilizing of instruments as needed.

6. Assists in the terminal cleaning of rooms and equipment on a daily, weekly, monthly basis as indicated.

7. Stock surgery suites and outlying areas as indicated at the end of the day's schedule.

8. Communicates supply shortages or other problems as appropriate to the staff or the charge person.

9. Contributes and fosters the team approach in all unit operations using positive interaction with customers.

10. Pre-cleans, decontaminates and transports contaminated instruments according to policy

11. Performs intermediate-level disinfection and/ or high level disinfection per the Instructions for Use (IFU) by the manufacture. This includes ensuring the scopes or probes used within the department are cleaned, disinfected, maintained and stored per the IFU's
