**Description**

Full Time: a position working 35+ hours per week.

Starting pay is $16.50/hour,but depends on experience. The Floral Designer position is responsible for planning, creating, installing, and maintaining floral displays at Biltmore House and other estate locations. These displays must be creative, in keeping with the look of the Vanderbilt era, and generate interest in the estate, encouraging new and repeat visits. The designers plan directly with the managers of estate facilities and will guide seasonal staff members in order to meet the deadlines and goals of the various departments. **Primary shift hours are 7:00a.m. - 3:30p.m.**

**Note: this position will start after March 1st, 2022.**

**Essential Job Duties**

1. To plan, create, implement, and maintain routine and special event decorations for assigned house areas and estate facilities. Displays include the creative use of fresh flowers, dried and silk materials, as well as tropical and potted plants.

2. Supervise, train, and assist temporary and call-in help during installation and tear down of routine and event displays.

3. Prioritize workload, establish and meet goals and deadlines, and assess progress for assigned work.

4. Establish good communication and a positive working relationship with the managers and staff of various Estate departments, including our own.

5. Research for creative, historically inspired ideas for appropriate displays. Continue learning about period design, historic interior styles, and cultural needs of tropical plants.

6. Apply and promote company and Biltmore House policies such as collection care and safety and security regulations.

7. Maintain and organize both house and warehouse work and storage spaces.

8. Prepare proposals and prototypes for approval by Estate facilities managers as requested.

9. Work overtime as required by supervisors and manager particularly during event set-up and removal.

**Qualifications**

1. High school diploma (or GED). Additional education, training, and/or certification(s) preferred. The ideal candidate will have a two-year degree in Horticulture.

2. At least three (3) years of experience in the floral industry. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. The preferred candidate will have had prior experience in designing and executing floral displays and/or interiors capes with special emphasis on gilded age design or other historical themes.

3. Solid knowledge of the care and maintenance of blooming and tropical plants, and the ability to anticipate, diagnose, and troubleshoot issues.

4. Demonstrated track record with creating interpretative floral designs based on themes or historical styles.

5. Proven commitment to delivering world class products and (internal and external) service.

6. Ability to be proactive and take initiative; must be able to exercise good judgment and perform duties with little supervision.

7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

8. Ability to work effectively as a team member to meet goals, and guide staff in the installation and maintenance of displays.

9. Strong planning, organizational, and project and time management skills; must be able to multi-task effectively and prioritize under deadlines.

10. Must have a valid NC Driver's License with clean driving record & be at least 18 years of age

**Physical Requirements**

1. Must be able to lift/push/pull up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 75 pounds a regular basis (with assistance). Ability to accurately judge color values.

2. Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time on hard surfaces (concrete and brick). Must be able to work effectively where dust, pollen, and particulates are present.

3. Ability to work repetitively cutting wires, pruning and cutting with shears, bow tying, squeezing glue gun trigger, pressing picking machine, watering plants.

4. Pushing and maneuvering (with assistance) watering tanks that can weigh up to 300 lbs., several times a week.

5. Climbing stairs regularly, and climbing ladders and scaffolding and working from them for extended periods of time.

6. Ability to work outdoors and inside in all types of weather with fluctuation conditions.

**Travel Required**
