Position Description

Mutual Materials Company's Lacey Plant manufactures concrete masonry products including, concrete pavers and retaining wall block. Under the supervision of the Plant Manager, the Plant Operator/Mechanic position supports the manufacturing plant in all areas of production, machine operation, equipment trouble shooting and repair, maintenance programs, and operates equipment/forklift on a regular basis to assist in the handling of finished product, raw materials, and other machinery and parts as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Assist other operators to set up machines and any other necessary tasks to adhere to deadlines and completion of product
  • Read job specifications to determine machine adjustments and material requirements
  • Observes machine operation to detect product defects or machine malfunction
  • Review product for inconsistencies or abnormal appearance assuring product meets quality requirements
  • Performs routine machine maintenance
  • Install, adjust, and repair production equipment as assigned
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools to repair, grease, weld, cut, change parts, and complete tasks as assigned
  • Troubleshoot Electrical, Hydraulic, and Mechanical systems to determine repairs, as needed
  • Observe mechanical devices and equipment and listen to sounds to determine proper functioning or identify causes of trouble
  • Operate a forklift to move product, raw materials and other equipment/parts as needed
  • Knowledge of all Safety Procedures and Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures for all machines/equipment
  • Make sure all housekeeping is maintained in a clear and orderly fashion throughout the plant
  • Other duties and responsibilities related to the nature of the job may be assigned on a temporary or permanent basis as needed


QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, experience and/or ability required in this job.
  • Experience in concrete manufacturing or operating paver machine equipment highly preferred, or with a minimum of 5 years of general manufacturing experience required
  • Min High school diploma or GED equivalent; at least 5 years of related experience in trades specific to job requirements; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals
  • Must be proficient in SMAW and MIG welding, with knowledge of the use of oxy/acetylene torch and plasma cutter usage
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions and operations manuals and follow step by step instructions
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability are essential
  • Forklift Certification preferred
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work independently as well successfully collaborate with entire team
  • Ability to add, subtract multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Must encompass computer literacy
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy in all aspects of work assignments
  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, and overtime
  • Good regular attendance is an essential requirement of the job
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, mechanics, electricity, or related field preferred


Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee will be required to frequently stand on their feet for extended periods of time, in a fast-paced environment
  • Requires frequent climbing, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, stooping, and twisting
  • Able to use tools and equipment to repair and provide maintenance while standing, crouching, stretching, and extending extremities in the work environment
  • Must have the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 lbs.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • The majority of the time working will be spent indoors in the plant; however duties will require being outdoors in all types of weather as needed
  • Exposed to loud equipment noises from operations to alerts, dust, and seasonal temperature variance both indoors and outdoors
