Job Summary

Responsible for 24 hour service provided on or by a department /patient care unit. Directs staff in all aspects of patient care including problem identification, planning implementation, and evaluation of all patient outcomes. No more than 20% of the time will be spent off the unit. The remaining 80% will be spent on the unit, engaged with the staff in the provision of patient care. Interviews, hires, counsels, and disciplines personnel. Oversees orientation of all staff assigned to these departments. Responsible for Service Excellence for patients, staff and physicians. Must possess good leadership skills to include critical thinking, communication, team building, and decision-making skills. Administers and supervises the services of a department/unit to render patient care as related to the patient. Holds self and staff accountable for the delivery of quality patient care.


Job Function

TECHNICAL TASKS: Plans and arranges for department unit meetings. Responsible for patient rounds. Responsible for timely and complete documentation relating to personnel files.


CRITICAL THINKING: Directs staff in the daily operations of the area including problem identification, planning, implementation, patient safety and evaluation of patient outcomes. Facilitates daily Care Coordination Rounds and ensures development of Plan of Care that meets individualized needs of patients. Interviews, hires, evaluates, councils, and disciplines personnel assigned to the unit and/or department. Identifies and maintains the number and level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care by determining activity/guidelines for the unit and/or department. Examines the delivery of patient care and identifies problems and any need for improvements, including patient safety. Provides and proposes educational programs to hospital employees, medical staff and community. Participates in the budgetary process by monitoring the expenditures and revenue of the unit. Oversees the orientation of new employees and provides assistance with development of competencies specific to the unit and/or department. Responsible for department/unit meeting the requirements of all regulatory agencies, licensing boards, and state and federal laws. Provides input for development and revisions of policies and procedures and standards of practice particular to the scope of care provided by the unit. Addresses customer satisfaction issues including patient, physician and staff issues on a on ongoing basis in a timely manner. Reviews customer satisfaction reports and provides input into addressing areas that need improvement. Initiates action to meet personal objectives. Functions as an integral team member and actively participates in unit council meetings and unit workgroups. Coordinates activities with other departments regarding needs of patients. Acknowledges patient and family values and acts as a role model for the staff.


Minimum Requirements

Experience: 3 years clinical experience required; pediatric experience required; specific training and experience in pediatric critical care required.

Education: BSN

Licensure: Current State of Louisiana R.N. License. BLS Certification; ACLS and PALS within 6 months
