About this opportunity:

This position receives, researches, locates, analyzes, prioritizes, and contacts funding sources in order to apply for grant funds; develop and maintains relationships with funders, prepares complex grant applications, writes narratives and compiles required paperwork to maximize opportunities for financial support for new and/or existing programs; ensures grant compliance by requesting and reviewing documents from all local units; serves as liaison to funding sources; represents The Salvation Army by performing community public speaking and networking to promote funding support for The Salvation Army's programs and develops and maintains, relationships with community leaders in order to promote support for Salvation Army programs.

Key responsibilities:

  • Receives funding opportunity leads from Resource Development Directors, Corps Officers, Program Coordinators, Program Managers, and Social Services Directors; interviews funding contacts and researches requirements/guidelines to determine eligibility requirements of The Salvation Army; acknowledges and meets deadlines; evaluates and prioritizes detailed research processes.


  • Works with field locations to determines funding needs; assists with finding answers to those funding needs; develops strategies to optimize the administration process. and stays involved from application to approval and utilization; meets with Corps Officer/Area Commander to discuss where funding opportunities may exist.


  • Researches, explores, locates, and develops new funding sources throughout the Division; determines if The Salvation Army can qualify for the potential grant by researching grant requirements, regulations, and fit for the organization.


  • Researches and interprets pre-award and post-award guidelines, regulations, and standards as well as agency or organization requirements, policies, and practices; and analyzes and communicates changes in regulations and procedures and their effect on cost reimbursements and financial operations.


  • Analyzes location data and writes a strong and effective proposal; ensures application is clear, concise, comprehensive, and compelling, and states the community need clearly; ensures grant is executed effectively and efficiently.


  • Develops partnerships with Corps Officers and staff, to understand and assist, in the development of new and/or existing program initiatives; utilizes knowledge of divisional field needs to seek funding opportunities via various avenues to support the initiatives; maintains awareness of needs throughout the division.


  • Travels onsite to assist Corps Officers, Resource Development Directors, Social Services Directors, and/or Program Managers in securing funding for new/existing programs.


  • Works closely with the Divisional Grants & Contracts Specialist in obtaining information on new/existing grants/contracts that have been processed and implemented for compliance purposes.


  • Meets with potential funders to represent The Salvation Army both locally and statewide to discuss Salvation Army programs to potential grant donors.


  • Works as a member of the senior administrative team in decision making and implementation of organizational initiatives.


  • Initiates and maintains communication with relevant agencies.


  • Instructs and provides reference and information services to staff as requested.


  • Enhances the grant processes and procedures by continuously identifying areas of improvement and recommending systemic improvements to supervisors.


  • Researches past and current compliance issues and collaborates with local team and DHQ Finance to develop processes to reduce risk for violating compliance regulations.


  • Maintains awareness of all local funding goals and works closely with the Area Commanders, Corps Officers, Social Services Directors, Program Managers, and resource development staff to ensure that funding needs are satisfied; coordinates efforts with other CRD, Social Services, and local staff to prevent duplication of efforts.


  • Supports and guides field's overall grant efforts, optimizes the grant administration process.


  • Coordinates with other Grant Writers in the field, officers, Regional Resource Development Directors, or other staff to ensure grants are written to provide the best chances for awards.


  • Prepares complex grant documents by clearly and effectively writing program narratives, rationale for requests and proposals for submission; prepares Request for Proposals (RFPs), contracts and agreements for submission to Divisional Headquarters for approval.


  • Represents The Salvation Army to the community, donor agencies and prospective grant funders to highlight Salvation Army programs and successes to aid in obtaining support for funding opportunities.


  • Researches, develops, writes, and submits foundation, corporate, state, and federal grants.


  • Reviews grant proposals, manages grant databases, tracks grant applications, and engages with donor agencies (State and City Government/Federal Government); develops and maintains relationships with Government agencies. engage with other entities to determine if qualifications are met or that waivers are agreed to.


  • Meets with funders to negotiate or renegotiate grant terms as requested by field officers or DHQ administration.


  • Determines and writes program budget as part of the grant writing process.


  • Coordinates receipt of awards and contract documentation.


  • Administers policies and procedures in accordance with State, Federal, and organizational guidelines.


  • Ensures required reports set by foundation guidelines and government regulations are completed; reviews guidelines and ensures report compliance by collaborating with field staff.


  • Develops and maintains donor and government relations with funders.


  • Requests financial reports from Divisional Finance Department and/or local finance and works with finance to Monitors grant expenditures to ensure funds are being spent according to the contract terms so as not to affect current or future funding; Works with field locations to resolve funding compliance issuesor reports unresolved issues to appropriate divisional management.


  • Ensure that grant compliance is reviewed and updated on a monthly basis.


  • Ensures grant steps are completed on time as specified by contract terms; works with field locations and/or funding sources to resolve compliance issues or reports unresolved issues to appropriate divisional management.


  • Assist Divisional Grants & Contract Specialist in reviewing contractual/collaborative agreements, such as a MOU & MOA and other proposals with partnering organizations.


  • Coordinates new, existing and previous grants from application to award and post-award.


  • Assists in assuring that grant proceedings and dealings are executed in compliance with grant requirements, organizational policies and procedures, and other regulatory laws.


  • Maintain grant database to track and inputs and updates pertinent grantor information; ensures the accuracy and completeness of all records.


  • Ensures all grants are located in a shared database per location.


  • Assists Corps and Divisional Social Services staff in Maintaining manuals and/or automated grant records via an established database (TSAMM) of all Divisional grants and the status of each.


  • Provides monthly report to DSSD on existing, new and potential grants


  • Serves as technical support and subject expert on grant processes, procedures, and regulations; serves as a proof-reader if another team member in CRD and/or Social Services writes a grant.


  • Assists the Divisional Social Services Director with addressing funders' concerns, questions, and/or providing additional information, as requested.


  • Organizes information tools and resources for optimal accessibility.


  • Provides consultation services on grant related activity


What we are looking for in you:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business, Marketing, English, Journalism, Communications, or related field


  • AND, four years experience in researching and applying for grant funding; writing foundation, corporation, local, state, federal grants and technical reports; securing funding through government grants/agreements/contracts; and ensuring compliance of such grants.


  • OR, any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


  • Valid State Driver's License


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.

Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.

Work is performed in an office, and/or various indoor community venues where there are little to no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

Work may require driving a vehicle where there may be discomforts associated with heavy traffic or changes in weather conditions.
