With minimal supervision, performs routine to moderately difficult power distribution, lighting, security, fire alarm and low-voltage system design assignments which require the application of fundamental design techniques in accordance with company and industry standards and codes. General instructions are provided by immediate supervisor for assignments requiring more-complex design concepts. This is the journey-level design position.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school graduate with vo-tech training in basic drafting technology and typically 11-12 years related experience (or equivalent working knowledge/experience)
  • 2-year degree in drafting/design technology and 9-10 years related experience.
  • Must demonstrate a sound understanding of design concepts with minimal engineering input and a proficiency in utilizing manual and computer-assisted techniques for moderately-difficult design assignments.

  • Establishes design criteria based on preliminary drawing and project estimates for or a complete phase of a project requiring the application of basic engineering principles, material properties, and a familiarity with construction, installation, and maintenance procedures.
  • Prepares detail and layout electrical drawings and sketches of unusual, complex, or original designs requiring the application of theoretical and practical engineering knowledge that will be clearly understood in the field during construction. Assignments regularly include determining material needs and performing necessary calculations using accepted formulas and references.
  • Reviews manufacturers or fabricators prints for conformance with contract specifications. Provides lower-level design/drafting personnel with design sketches for preparation of finished design drawings, general layouts, and guidance in refining technical requirements.
  • Supports field assignments and may lead field walk-downs as required.
  • Checks work assigned to lower-level design/drafting personnel to ensure accurate and correct calculations.
  • Must keep up to date on the latest developments and electrical products and be able to judge their suitability for specific uses that will produce the most economical and reliable systems possible.
  • May provide conceptual input to projects during the planning stages.
