Job Description:

This is an hourly position in the Recreation Division that provides recreational activities for individuals with disabilities. The work involves providing one to one assistance with participants who are unable to independently participate in recreational activities and/or programs. General supervision is provided by Therapeutic Recreation Services.

Essential Job Functions

Demonstrates initiative and enthusiasm in providing recreational opportunities to participants.

Interacts and communicates with staff in adapting activities that are age and ability appropriate for participants.

Provides one to one assistance and participates with assigned participants in scheduled activities, such as swimming, boating, field trips, structured classes and physical activities.

Provides a safe environment for participants, staff, and volunteers.

Communicates with coordinator and staff regarding activities, participants, and personnel issues.

Other Job Duties (Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor limit reasonably assigned duties)

Feeds, clothes, and assists participants with toileting who are unable to do so independently.

Maintains records of attendance, writes daily progress notes, and completes other paperwork required by the Therapeutic Recreation Services.

Reports any issues, problems, or concerns when they occur to Therapeutic Recreation Services.

Performs any assigned duties that relate to successful operation of a therapeutic recreation program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, (Pre-employment KSA applicable to essential job functions)

Knowledge of --

  • Summer Camp programs.
  • Implementing and adapting activities for maximum participation and independence.
  • Various disabilities.
Ability to --
  • Participate in a variety of creative and physical recreational activities on a daily basis.
  • Interact with staff in a professional manner with integrity and good judgment.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with parents, community members, and staff.
  • Transfer individuals in/out of wheelchairs.
  • Work with individuals in the swimming pool.
  • Deal effectively with the public.


Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)

Training and/or Education

Completion of 10th grade.

Experience

Three months experience working with individuals with special needs.

Licenses or Certificates

First aid and CPR preferred

Special Requirements

Subject to background investigation.

Physical Demands

Medium to heavy physical effort required, Non Violent Crisis Intervention.

Unusual Demands

May work evenings, weekends or holidays

FLSA Status

Nonexempt

Compensation Steps:

H04: $17.09 per hour
