Utilities System Mechanic I

General Statement of Duties
Performsresponsible technical and skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair,and replacement of machinery and equipment in sewer pumping stations.

Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs journey level operations and mechanical work in the operation,maintenance, and repair of large and specialized equipment and machinery insewer pumping stations. Work involves responsibility for maintaining and repairing motors, chemical pumps, and related equipment. Work requiresknowledge of trade skills in mechanical and plumbing areas. Work is performedunder the direction of a utility maintenance crew leader and is evaluated foreffectiveness in returning equipment to proper operating conditions withingiven time schedules, and overall effectiveness of system performance. This isa nonsupervisory classification.

Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains and repairs pumps, motors, and hydraulic systems and other apparatus and equipment applicable to sewer pump stations
Plans and participates in regular preventative maintenance inspections such as checking and lubricating bearings, gear boxes, checking and replacing filters, cleaning out wet wells, packing pumps, mowing and other preventative maintenance activities
Assists with troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing parts, electrical panels, pump station alarms, or equipment due to failure; reads blueprints and cross-references with manufacturer manuals; evaluates varied problems and determines priorities for repair.
Dismantles and overhauls equipment; cleans, replaces and repairs gauges, grit collectors, grinders, pumps, diffusers, engines, and blowers; rebuilds and overhauls defective parts and machinery, instrumentation and equipment; maintains and services electrical generators for emergency power sources during outages
Operates varied equipment in the maintenance of municipal infrastructure including back hoes, tractors, rollers, motor graders, and other mechanical equipment
Performs related duties as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, plumbing, and hydraulic components of wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work
Considerable knowledge of the tools, parts and methods associated with diagnosing, repairing and maintaining equipment
Knowledge of state laws regulating wastewater treatment and the standard procedures necessary to meet permitted requirements
Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade
Ability to detect malfunctioning of pumps and motors by observation, sound and chart readings, and to take proper remedial action
Ability to read and follow schematic drawings, blueprints and written and oral instructions
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisor
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and records and prepare reports
Physical Requirements
Must be able tophysically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing,stooping kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting,fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing and repetitive motions. Must be able toperform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or upto 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly.Must possess the visual acuity to operate machines and equipment includingclose inspection of moving and small parts, using measurement devices, performassembly and fabrication of parts, prepare maintenance records and operate acomputer terminal.

Working Conditions
The employeeis subject to hazards associated with wastewater and mechanical operationsincluding working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such asloud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding, and exposure to chemicals fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation and oils. Work around rawsewage is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens.

Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and three to five years of experience in water and sewage pump repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the plumbing field sufficient to provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position.

Special Requirements
Ability to obtain Grade II Wastewater certification within one year of employment A valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Compensation: $43,250.00-$67,578.00
