Position Summary

Building & Fleet Division: The Electrician-II installs and repairs electrical systems in buildings and installs and repairs apparatuses, electrical and electronic components for City equipment and machinery.

Engineering/Traffic Operation Division: The Electrician-II installs repairs and maintains street lighting, traffic signals and other electrical control devices as related to traffic engineering to ensure optimum public safety on City streets.

Incumbents back each other up and are on-call for weekends and after-hours emergencies.

Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Three years of experience as a journeyman electrician.

Education and/or experience preferences: None

Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Required certifications, licenses or registrations: Valid Journeyman's Electrician License (JE-98).

Time given after hire/promotion to obtain certification or licenses: IMSA Certification in Work Zones and Traffic Signals Level I must be obtained within one year of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge: Relevant federal, state and local laws, regulations, rules and ordinances, and City and departmental policies and procedures related to area of operation and safety including occupational hazards and safety precautions. The use of proper tools, equipment utilized safety requirements, techniques, practices and principles. Blueprint, plans, schematics and other construction-related documents.

Skills: The safe use and care of hand tools and equipment necessary to perform various electrical repairs. The safe operation of a motor vehicle in City traffic and job sites.

Abilities: Read construction blueprints and develop materials specifications. Use hand and power tools and equipment. Read, comprehend and carry out detailed but routine written or oral instructions. Write short routine correspondence and memos. Communicate effective with employees' and customers. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals and compute rate, ratio, and percent. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with City department representatives to plan and implement construction and repair projects and with laborers, skilled craft persons, and Public Works supervisors to plan and complete projects on time and within cost. External: Communicates with vendors supplying materials for City projects to insure that materials meet standards and specifications.

Essential Functions

Building & Fleet Division:

  • Operates, maintains, tests, troubleshoots and repairs electronic components, electrical systems and electrical equipment in City buildings to include: locating problems; determining course of action; and coordinating repairs with affected parties. Involves but is not limited to:
  • Reviews work orders, maintains activity logs, prepares requisitions and obtains approvals for various projects.
  • Designs, fabricates and installs electrical systems and components to include ensuring code compliance and installing and maintaining the electrical equipment.
  • Responds to emergencies including evaluating and taking required actions and determining if support is needed immediately.
  • Plans layout of wiring and installs wiring, conduit, and electrical apparatuses in buildings.
  • Installs electrical wiring in City buildings during construction and remodeling and troubleshoots electrical problems as required.
  • Installs power supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment.
  • Connects power supply wires to machines and equipment, and connects cables and wires between machines and equipment.
  • Tests malfunctioning machinery and discusses malfunction with other maintenance workers, to diagnose malfunction.
  • Replaces faulty electrical components of machine such as relays, switches, and motors.
  • Diagnoses and repairs or replaces faulty electronic components in buildings and structures, such as printed circuit boards.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs electrical systems, wiring fixtures and other related electrical equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and corrects power failures, short circuits and related electrical wiring system problems.
  • Installs computer cables and network cables and hooks up related equipment.
  • Designs and estimates costs of electrical projects and coordinates with vendors.
  • Makes purchases, charge purchases on work orders and credit card purchases in accordance with established policies and procedures. Reconciles credit card purchases.
  • Assists in general building maintenance and construction tasks as needed.

Engineering/Traffic Operations Division:

  • Performs work associated with traffic signal system installation/maintenance projects: installs and maintains traffic signal cabinet equipment; maintains intersection equipment; installs signal heads and pedestrian heads; replaces LED lights; solders electric pins and circuit boards; conducts diagnostic testing of monitors and new cabinets; replaces or repairs loops, circuits, pull boxes, cabinets, and other components; wires electrical circuits; locates underground signal cables, street lighting circuits and traffic signal interconnect; paints signal heads; removes graffiti from poles and equipment as needed; digs holes/trenches; ensures adherence with guidelines/standards governing installation and maintenance of traffic signal systems.
  • Performs work associated with street light installation/maintenance projects: installs and maintains street light equipment which may include, trouble-shooting, bulb-maintenance, photocell maintenance, knockdown repair, re-wiring circuits, monitoring street lights, conduit and cable installation, fuse replacement and other maintenance duties as needed; ensures adherence with guidelines/standards governing installation and maintenance of street lighting systems.
  • Designs and estimates costs of electrical projects and coordinates with vendors and makes purchases, charge purchases on work orders and credit card purchases in accordance with established policies and procedures. Reconciles credit card purchases.
  • Monitors City streets to identify inoperative traffic signals, needed repairs, or other situations requiring attention; initiates corrective action or reports problem situations to supervisor as appropriate.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals: re-directs traffic and/or places traffic barricades, safety cones, markers, or signs to alert employees/citizens of work areas or other potential hazards.
  • Responds to emergency situations, after-hours calls, or special requests as needed: responds to situations involving inoperative/malfunctioning traffic signals, accidents, roadway spills or debris, or other situations. Standby on holiday and weekends may be required.
  • Maintains records of inspections, installations, maintenance work, emergency calls, and other work activities and prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, inspection reports, emergency call-out reports, or other documents.
  • Oversees work performed by contracted service providers, including repairs of damage caused by private contractors engaged in other projects.
  • Assists other Traffic Operation personnel with field duties as needed.
  • Assists in general building maintenance and construction tasks as needed.
