Reports to: Library Associate - Jefferson Branch Coordinator

Starting pay rate: $17.00 per hour

Schedule: Full-time, 37.5-hour per week position

Position Summary:

Library Assistant II performs a wide range of off- and on-desk paraprofessional library functions. Work involves frequent patron contract; requires use of automated library systems for various clerical tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greets visitors and assists in use of Library materials; responds to requests for assistance or referring to appropriate staff member; responds to phone calls.
  • Enforces rules regarding Library procedures.
  • Retrieves materials for patrons or other staff.
  • Attends meetings, library programs, and/or workshops as assigned.
  • Assists in the orientation of new staff.
  • Performs circulation desk tasks; performs database duties as necessary, including compilation of statistics and other information for departmental utilization and running reports as necessary.
  • Helps with planning and/or implementation of library policies and outreach.

  • Handles circulation procedures (charging, renewing, and returning items), collecting payments, registering patrons, and opening/closing procedures. Is observant of materials with holds and transfers holds as needed.
  • Checks in materials, inspects for damage, makes repairs, and records actions in the database.
  • Processes damaged or missing items, inter-library loans, claims returned/not taken, and runs reports as necessary.
  • Maintains materials by reading shelves, shifting, sorting, reshelving, and organizing materials in their proper sequence.
  • Sorts overdue notices and sends letters for damaged/lost items.
  • Maintains "New" shelf books and creates special book displays.
  • Checks materials for labeling or record errors.
  • Processes newspapers and magazines to put out for the public.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and post-secondary coursework, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficiency with keyboarding and filing. Minimum of two years of library experience. Preferred skill includes language proficiency in Polish, Spanish or other language spoken by patrons.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability

Excellent customer service skills and an ability to effectively interact with a diverse group of patrons and staff. Effective communication skills, verbal and written. Acts as an ambassador for the Library in all interactions and promotes the Library in public venues. Proficient with computers and office equipment, including excellent keyboarding skills. Requires attention to detail and ability to do tasks of a repetitive nature.

Physical Requirements

The work requires regular bending, stretching, stooping, pushing and pulling; lifting print and other materials, office equipment and supplies of up to 25 pounds and the ability to move a reasonable quantity of materials from place to place within or outside the Library. May require standing, sitting, and/or walking for extended periods of time.
