Kleinfelder is seeking a Senior Scientist/Project Manager to join our Environmental Team and join our Boston or Worcester office. Candidates may choose to sit in our Boston or Worcester, Massachusetts office. Remote working is an option; however, this role is also intended to be a mentor to our team of professionals, and opportunities for in-office engagement are encouraged. Our Environmental Team includes local engineers geologists, hydrogeologists, and scientists as well a larger national community of practice. The role is intended to be interdisciplinary, and assignments may be generated through any of our many practice areas.

Candidates must have experience interacting successfully with internal and external clients of various levels including engineers, contractors / subcontractors, municipalities, public agencies, planners, and analysts. Ideal candidates will be resourceful, have attention to detail, able to work independently in the office and field and have strong time-management skills. The candidate will direct work, delegate, and progress sites forward to meet client needs. The chosen individual stepping into this role will be performing field visits as needed to support construction activities and regulatory compliance in relation to, soil, hazardous building materials, indoor air quality and groundwater. This role will be approximately 90% office based and 10% field based.

Responsibilities in this role:

  • Provide technical and coordination support for environmental assessment and remediation projects, and work with Kleinfelder engineering and architecture teams to provide environmental services supporting design and construction phases of large multi-discipline projects
  • Manage scope, schedule and budget for environmental projects
  • Write and review technical reports, waste documentation, and project correspondence
  • Lead coordination with internal and external teams of clients and stakeholders.
  • Manage subcontractors, coordinate with lab and other third parties (eg, property owners, utilities, etc)
  • Coordinate and delegate field and office activities to staff members. Work collaboratively and mentor staff to develop technical capabilities and ensure quality deliverables. Provide thoughtful feedback.
  • Draft construction specifications and provide recommendations to support development of design documents. Review contractor submittals, respond to requests for information, review and track soil management during construction.
  • Assist area business development activities and maintain effective client relations. Supports operational leadership with strategic planning.
  • Understand financial management concepts and effectively prepare scope & fee for new or additional work.
  • Recommend process and system improvements that result in greater efficiencies, enhanced capabilities, and costs savings.
  • Construction permitting (Conservation Commission filings, MassDOT access, NPDES RGP)
  • Collect water, soil, air, and/or wipe samples for contamination and/or regulated materials/chemicals analyses, including asbestos. Prepare and review of field documentation and records.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Natural Sciences, Geology, Industrial Hygiene, or related subjects.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience with environmental remediation, including extensive experience providing environmental support and management for large interdisciplinary design and construction projects.
  • Knowledge of specification development; contractor management; and hazardous materials building assessments.
  • Experience with various environmental regulations related to site assessment, remediation, and soil, groundwater and waste management including ASTM Phase I/II, Massachusetts Contingency Plan, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), MassDEP Similar Soils Policy, Massachusetts Wetland Protection Act, NPDES Remediation General Permit and Construction General Permit.
  • Ability to meet with and understand the needs of internal and external clients, be responsive, organized, and prioritize deadlines for multiple projects.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of engineering design and construction timelines and schedule, and experience with providing recommendations tailored to project needs at each phase.
  • Able to clearly communicating risks and options with multidisciplinary design teams as well as to the client.
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred qualifications:

  • 40-hour HAZWOPER or 10-hour OSHA certification
  • Experience with ACM management for hazardous building materials, Current Commonwealth of Massachusetts Asbestos certifications
  • Previous experience with working with municipalities or state agencies
  • Previous experience as project manager or task lead.
  • Demonstrated experience in Soil Management
  • Experience with demolition and decommissioning
  • Previous experience with construction health and safety plans including hazardous material safety
  • Experience with supporting Horizontal Directional Drilling Projects.
