Description

Under supervision, to prepare surfaces and mix, match, and apply a variety of paints and paint products to the interior and exterior of buildings, equipment, furniture, and machinery.

NOTE: Candidates who meet the employment standards will be invited to take a practical exam tentatively scheduled for the week of August 12th, 2024. Qualifying candidates will be notified of the examination instructions.

Typical Tasks

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  • Performs all types of rough and finish painting using rollers, brushes, and spray equipment;
  • Paints a variety of surfaces, including but not limited to floors, walls, ceilings, moldings, window frames, chairs, benches, cabinets, and shelves;
  • Prepares surfaces for painting, which includes sanding, scraping, burning, washing, and patching holes and cracks;
  • Lays and arranges drop cloths;
  • Erects scaffolding;
  • Mixes and matches paints, lacquers, varnishes, stains, and enamels;
  • Cleans brushes and maintains other painting equipment;
  • Creates and engraves signs and nameplates, creates decals, and installs prepared signage;
  • May install glass windowpanes, which includes cutting glass to size and installing with putty or neoprene, metal, and vinyl strips;
  • May lay non-ceramic floor tile, which includes mixing adhesive, cleaning area to be tiled, and cutting tile to fit;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;
  • Performs other related duties, as required.


Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through the successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship program for Painters,

or

Four (4) years of equivalent training and/or experience.

Special Requirements:
  • Based on departmental assignment, may be required to obtain and maintain a Department of Correction Security Clearance to work in locked facilities throughout the term of employment.
  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
  • *As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.
Knowledge of:
  • Practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the painting trade, including but not limited to the preparation of surfaces; mixing, matching, and applying paint and other paint products; methods of erecting scaffolding, and the use and care of brushes and equipment;
  • Safety regulations and procedures, including the proper identification of safety hazards;
  • Common computer systems and applications.
Ability to:
  • Perform journey-level painting work on a wide variety of painting projects;
  • Identify lead paint hazards, damaged asbestos, mold growth, and other safety hazards;
  • Safely and effectively operate related tools and equipment;
  • Mix, match, and apply paints and paint products;
  • Apply paint, plaster, and other surfacing materials to various surfaces;
  • Follow oral and written instructions;
  • Read and interpret plans, layouts, and blueprints;
  • Utilize specialized departmental computer programs and systems, including but not limited to timekeeping programs, sign shop software, and work order systems;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies.
