POSITION: Wildlife Technician I/II - Seasonal

SALARY: $20.00-$24.34 DOE

REPORTS TO: Technician II/Senior/Leader

LOCATION: Inchelium, WA

Basic Functions: Working under supervision of the Natural Resource Technician Il/Senior in Nespelem, this position will assist with the protection, enhancement, and restoration of wildlife habitats on wildlife mitigation properties on the Colville Reservation. Primary duties of the Natural Resource Technician 1/11 include: performing integrated noxious weed control (spraying, mowing, bio-controls, seeding, etc.), utilizing farm and other mechanical equipment, removing trespass livestock, fence construction, maintenance, and removal. Position requires extensive field work in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

Education and Training:

Natural Resource Technician l:

  • High School Diploma or GED and a satisfactory work history

Natural Resource Technician Il:
  • High School Diploma or GED and 36 months progressively responsible experience equivalent to the Technician I or equivalent. An AA degree from a regionally accredited college in wildlife, natural resources or other applicable science will substitute for some experience. (Copy college transcript required to be given credit.)
  • Requires a supervisor's training certificate or attend training within 90 days of employment. Must successfully clear a Criminal Background Check and maintain throughout the duration of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Requires knowledge of general principles and procedures of biological data collection, wildlife management, food and habits of wildlife species, wildlife and habitat ecology, basic fence construction, noxious and invasive weed control measures and/or spray applications.
  • Ability to document and track fence and herbicide records and other weed control methods.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to achieve results, goals, and objectives on time.
  • Ability to effectively handle adverse situations, making appropriate decisions, working calmly, and accurately.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to the general public and other co-workers.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain project equipment such as 4-wheel drive vehicle, ATV, tractor, chainsaw, and power equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate trucks and trailers; backing up, loading, and unloading equipment off the trailers.
  • Ability to safely and effectively supervise small work crews by understanding and following applicable regulations and standards to maintain a safe work environment. Remind others of safety practices to minimize the likelihood of accidents.
  • Ability to use standard laboratory and field equipment (such as herbicide application equipment).
  • Ability to conduct fence construction, maintenance, and removal.
  • Must be in good physical condition to be able to work and hike in inclement weather conditions and over variable and rugged terrain.
  • Must be able to repetitively lift up to 50 lbs. and carry up to 45 lbs. while hiking in steep terrain.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time (hours).
  • Requires ability and willingness to work in varying, sometimes remote, locations in all kinds of weather.
  • Must be able to work variable hours, long days, early mornings, holidays, and weekends as the work dictates.
  • Must work effectively in a multi-cultural environment as a team member.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license and be eligible for the Tribes' Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
