Location: The position will be primarily located at one of the library branches.

REPORTS TO: Branch Manager / Systems & Access Services Librarian

CIVIL SERVICE JOB TITLE: Principal Library Assistant

SALARY RANGE: $45,000 - $49,000 per year

FULL-TIME/PART-TIME: Full-Time

WORKWEEK: 09:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (35 hours/week). Will be required to work evenings and weekends as scheduled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Performs administrative work overseeing the circulation processes and patron account maintenance at JCFPL branch libraries and does related work as required. Serves as the point of contact within the branch about circulation functions and patron accounts. Coordinators with peers at other branches to ensure uniformity with procedures and processes. Collaborates with the Library Systems and Access Services Librarian to set system-wide procedures, identify training needs, and monitor and adjust procedures to ensure a seamless experience for patrons.

Work is performed with independence under the supervision of the library branch manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages all aspects and activities related to circulation.
  • Works closely with the Library Systems and Access Services Librarian to maintain operational and procedural standards related to circulation functions and record maintenance.
  • Trains other branch staff members on all tasks related to circulation and patron record management.
  • Greets customers, checks library materials in and out, sorts and routes returned materials.
  • Places holds on materials and pulls customer requests from the shelves.
  • Registers new borrowers, records fees, and resolves issues related to library accounts.
  • Facilitates and manages money handling to include, but not limited to, daily revenue reports, cash management reports, reconciling cash register, daily bank deposits, audits, and coin-op machine.
  • Monitors the condition of library materials that enter through circulation and determines appropriate repair actions to be taken.
  • Makes decisions on specific operating problems in accordance with library procedures.
  • Provides excellent customer service in a team-based environment.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including at least one evening shift and a Saturday weekend rotation.
  • Performs related tasks as required or requested.
  • The employee could be asked to work at other library locations.

MINUMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or university and two years of paraprofessional experience in business, libraries or local government. Knowledge of library circulation systems and automation or willingness to complete extensive training within the first 90 days.
