POSITION TITLE: Sterile Processing Technician

SCHEDULE:VARIED FLEX SHIFTS 7AM 3PM, 8AM -4PM, 9AM-5PM, 10AM 6PM, 11AM 7PM

REPORTS TO: Peri-Operative Nurse Manager

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Sterile Processing Technician performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning (if appropriate), sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Responsibilities:

Performs a variety of instrumentation decontamination, sterilization, packaging, inventory, and distribution tasks according to established department policies and procedures.

Dissembles, cleans, sterilizes, reassembles, and packages sterile supplies according to specifications and/or manufacturer instructions.

Follows department procedures to use appropriate sterilization methods for various types of instrumentation.

Operates washers, sterilizers, ultrasonic machines, and additional equipment during sterilization procedures.

Adheres to instrument count sheets for surgical sets and accurately records such.

Rotates trays and sets per sterile storage guidelines.

Follows safety protocols to ensure no injury to self/others (proper body mechanics, protective apparel during decontamination procedures, etc.)

Process used trays, instruments, and equipment from clinical areas.

Examines instruments and patient care equipment for cleanliness, proper assembly.

Identifies malfunctioning items, records related information, and promptly notifies supervisor or biomedical engineer.

Communicates with perioperative staff regarding related instrument needs.

Transports sterile supplies to assigned surgical and clinical locations.

Assists in stocking, and maintaining department inventory levels.

Performs required duties to maintain a contaminant-free work environment.

Documents and maintains records of daily activities according to department policies and procedures.

Adheres to AORN, AAMI, and Joint Commission standards (e.g biological, chemical, and mechanical monitoring) in the performance of duties.

Participates in department quality control programs and in-service training, as required.

Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent, required.

Sterile processing certification (CRCST or CSPD) OR provisional certification (CRCST), is required.

Must complete minimum annual continuing education credits required by NY State AND additional continuing education credits required to maintain certification status.

Ability to lift/carry 25 pounds, required.

Manual dexterity, ability to stand, bend, lift and/or reach for extended periods, required.

Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) and follow oral and/or written instructions, required.

Physical Demands:

Job requires standing for prolonged periods and frequent walking and reaching. Ability to lift/push/pull items, supplies and equipment that may have considerable weight.

Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Southampton's Employee Health Services*

Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen*

Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.

Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
