Job Title: Computer Technician Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Summary:

Perform on-site technical work to install and maintain computer equipment and network and software applications throughout the district and assigned campus. Respond to work order requests by diagnosing and repairing network and computer hardware.

Qualifications/Education:

  • Associates Degree in a computer related field required from an accredited college or university required
  • Two years work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing computers and peripherals
  • Experience working in a school district setting preferred
  • Clear and valid Texas Driver's License


Other Skills and Abilities:
  1. Knowledge of computer workstation setup (identify requirement-i.e., Novell workstation).
  2. Knowledge of computer hardware and software applications.
  3. Strong knowledge of Internet and web-related technology.
  4. Ability to use hand tools and test instruments for electronic repairs and cable installations.
  5. Ability to install, maintain, and repair computers and peripherals.
  6. Ability to install and maintain network cables and hardware.
  7. Ability to diagnose problems and perform repairs.
  8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  9. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators and the general public.
  10. Ability to perform duties remotely and/or on a flex schedule, upon approval by superintendent, in response to pandemics, natural disasters, catastrophic events, etc. and will be subject to virtual/distance learning policies and procedures as set forth in employee handbook.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Technical Support
  1. Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade computers and peripherals, network cabling, and network peripherals throughout the district. Relocate computer hardware, peripherals, and equipment as needed.
  2. Provide technical assistance to users of computers, instructional equipment, and software.
  3. Install and configure application and operating system software and upgrades.
  4. Assist with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of data communications circuits and equipment.
  5. Assist with the organization and distribution of technology-based material for classroom use.
Equipment Repair and Maintenance
  1. Diagnose and repair network connectivity and hardware issues, including printers, terminals, and personal computers.
  2. Remove old equipment and perform data migration to new machines.
  3. Service equipment according to established preventive maintenance schedule. Maintain accurate updated records of preventive maintenance.
Inventory
  1. Maintain accurate inventory of hardware, software, and other equipment and material at assigned site(s).
  2. Identify, request, and control the inventory of repair parts.
Other
  1. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents.
  2. Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately.
  3. Maintain confidentiality.
  4. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  5. Participate in meetings and special events as assigned.
  6. Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work, meetings, and appointments.
  7. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
  8. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  9. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  10. Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Equipment Used:

Computer, telephone, printer, copier, fax machine and calculator. Hand tools and test instruments for electronic repairs and cable installations; personal computers and peripherals; small truck or van.
Working Conditions:

Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is subject to prolonged sitting and standing; regular kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting, Repetitive hand motion; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; regular walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching; may climb ladders. Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 44 pounds); occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds and over). Exposure to electrical hazards; occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent districtwide travel; May be required to be on-call 24 hours a day. Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.
