Department: Laboratory- Microbiology

Full Time: Full Time (40 hrs/wk), Nights

GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Microbiology Manager. The Microbiology Laboratory Technical Assistant's primary job function is to collect and process specimens. Performs non-complex diagnostic testing under the supervision of a MLT or MT. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

* High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

* Basic chemistry and biology are minimum requirements

* Associate degree (particularly in Medical Laboratory Technology) with clinical laboratory experience preferred

Licensure:

* None

Experience:

* Three to six months of laboratory experience required

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

1. Orders and processes specimens for various laboratory tests. Verifies patient Identification.

2. Performs non-complex testing on automated instruments under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist. May perform physiochemical analysis and occult blood testing on biological specimens.

3. Performs and documents Quality Control and daily instrument maintenance.

4. Centrifuges specimens and distributes to work stations. Checks pendings and aliquots specimens for testing. Prepares and labels simple solutions for use in diagnostic testing. Prepares specimens for transport to reference laboratories.

5. Keeps work area neat and clean. Follows all safety policies and procedures. Takes inventory, stocks and orders supplies for area.

6. Participates in training and orientation of new staff and students.

7. Assists supervisors with clerical and technical support duties as assigned.
