Description

The Citations and Hotline Section (CHS) of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is seeking to hire three students to become a member of its team that is responsible for enforcing CARB regulations designed to reduce emissions and improve air quality and for assuring that vapor recovery systems on cargo tanks operate in compliance with adopted standards and procedures under the Regulation for the Certification of Vapor Recovery Systems for Cargo Tanks.

Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.

UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.

Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule

Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.

Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).

Minimum Qualifications

  • The candidate must be familiar with Windows operating systems including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Proficiency in operating office equipment including copiers, printers, and scanners is required.
  • Candidates must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.


Preferred Qualifications

  • The successful candidate must have excellent communication, writing, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • The candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm and initiative and work effectively in both team and individual settings.
  • The candidate must possess the proven ability to meet deadlines; follow written and verbal instructions; use tact and good judgment in dealing with people; apply good customer service techniques; and work effectively under pressure.
  • Bilingual skills are desirable but not required.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Data Entry.
  • Literature research.
  • Work related to Air Quality and Enforcement Process.
  • Assisting the section's technical staff in the review and processing of citation packages, responding to complaints, and in the review and interpretation of air quality data and air pollution regulation requirements.
  • Assist technical staff with the processing and accounting of certifications for statewide programs, including the Cargo Tank Program.
    • Assisting technical staff in reviewing and processing cargo tank certification applications for consistency with regulatory requirements.
  • Utilize writing, editing, and communication skills when:
    • Assisting technical staff in responding to inquires received via email or phone and providing information to the regulated industries.
    • Preparing correspondence documents for internal and external stakeholders, including notices of violation and complaint courtesy letters.
  • Use spreadsheets and statistical programs to enter and analyze data, and create visualized charts/tables.
  • Assist in the maintenance of files/reproduction.
  • Ensuring Compliance with State Laws and regulations, including proper adherence to Record Retention and Personal Identifiable Information policies.
  • Assist with various administrative functions.
  • Use experience gathered on the job to provide training and guidance to other incoming student assistants and update current training manuals.


Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office environment.
