Position: Crane Operator

Duties & Responsibilities

The Central Coil Storage Operator receives, stocks and controls the inventory of hot rolled steel coils that are delivered to the plant by road transport.

Specific duties include:

Operations

  • Operating cranes and/or forklifts to receive, stock and control the inventory of hot rolled steel coils that are delivered to the plant by road transportation.
  • Using crane to position coils in the designated receptacles, stacking them as per stacking rules. Also using cranes/forklifts for movement of inbound, in-process and finished goods.
  • Responsible for operation of crane used in heavy lifting and transport, ensuring that the coil weights are within the rated load capacity of the crane, performing preventative maintenance as required to ensure safe and continual service of crane.
  • Responsible for slings, cables, straps, and the crane prior to lifting operations
  • Unloading covered rail wagons opening and closing wagons using the appropriate tools, reporting any damaged rail wagons immediately to the Production Team Leader.
  • Examining coils to ensure that they conform to specifications, undertaking inspection and testing as required and documented in the Product Control Plan.
  • Recording data, checking delivered coils conform to quality requirements, comparing and verifying information on delivered coil labels compared to shipping documents from the supplier, placing any suspect coils on hold for quality control/inspection.
  • Inputting delivered coil data into the warehouse computer system, using handheld barcode scanner to capture delivered coil details, determining storage location.
  • Printing identification tags on finished product for subsequent processing and traceability.
  • Positioning steel coils on conveyors, using crane, chain hoists or grabs, to transport them to subsequent stations.
  • Instructing team members in unloading and warehousing operation. Reading production schedules and work orders to determine processing sequences for the delivery of steel coils to production units.
  • Ensuring that housekeeping and 5S standards are maintained in the steel coil warehouse area.
