Position Overview

The Facility Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing routine maintenance tasks, conducting minor repairs, and ensuring the overall upkeep of the facility. Employee in this class repairs and maintains physical structures of county-owned buildings; inspects and maintains buildings for proper utilization; follows established standard work methods and procedures; receives assignments, supervision, and review of work from a technical supervisor. The employee may work independently or assist others as needed on projects such as carpentry, painting, plumbing repair, electrical work, masonry, moving and assembly of furniture, and other maintenance work in county-owned facilities. This role involves working on various systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical, to ensure a safe, comfortable, and functional environment for all employees and visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain physical structures of county-owned buildings, ensuring their optimal condition and utilization.
  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings to identify and address maintenance needs and potential hazards.
  • Follow established standard work methods and procedures to complete maintenance tasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to a small team of employees when necessary, ensuring project goals and deadlines are met.
  • Assist in moving and assembling furniture and equipment within the facility as required.
  • Perform carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical work, and masonry projects to maintain and enhance the facility.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of a technical training program in facilities management, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in carpentry, electrical repair, plumbing, and blueprint reading is preferred.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., HVAC certification, Electrical certification) are a plus.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, and practices of carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
  • Some knowledge of blueprint reading.
  • Some knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to the trade.
  • Ability to write instructions and understand written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform work requiring mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong understanding of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical.
  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and work in various conditions.

Other Requirements

Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call as needed.
  • May be required to respond to emergency maintenance requests outside of regular working hours.
  • Must be able to work outside as required; able to climb a ladder and work from scaffolding.
  • Must be physically able to climb, bend, stoop, crawl, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Work Schedule
  • 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • Monday - Friday

Dental Coverage: Dental coverage is included with LGHIP through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. LGHIP manages dental costs and provides enhanced dental benefits using negotiated discounts with in-network dentists. To locate in-network dentists go to www.bcbsal.com. Assuming the services are covered you will normally only be responsible for out of pocket.

Life Insurance: Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.

Employee Retirement Plans: Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have an accelerated contribution schedule

Employee Clinic: Madison County employees and dependents over age 12 may use the Employee Health Clinic for the low co-pay of $15.00 per visit. To be eligible to use the clinic, the employee and dependent must be enrolled in Madison County's health insurance plan as their primary coverage.
