Entry-Level Safety, Health & Environmental Specialist

Job Responsibilities

To understand and observe all of Carroll Concrete Co., Newport Sand & Gravel Co., Inc.'s policies and procedures including but not limited to the Employee Handbook, Training Manual, SAFE Policy, Safety Manual, Drug Free Work Place Manual. All duties are accomplished under the direct supervision of the company's Safety Health & Environmental Director.

As this position involves extensive interpersonal contact within and outside the company it requires a strong attitude of professionalism and team building.
Training

1. Schedule, conduct and track OSHA first aid training

2. Schedule and track MSHA training for sand and gravel division employees

3. Conduct new employee safety orientation training in conjunction with HR and Training Manager

4. Other training as necessary
Job Hazard Awareness/Accident Investigations/Job Site Safety

1. Conduct job hazard awareness checks

2. Prepare comprehensive recommendations for corrective action to eliminate or minimize potential hazards

3. Perform on-site accident investigations in conjunction with managers, with goal of determining root cause to ensure no repeat issues

4. Under the direction of SHE Director, works as liaison with insurance company and sees that all accidents are reported and processed properly, and corresponds with all involved parties until claims are resolved

5. Works closely with Operations, assists with traffic control and safety compliance on jobsites and at the plants
Inspections and Compliance Checks

1. Maintain Hazard Communication Program (SDS compliance at all levels and locations)

2. Conducts safety and health audits at plants and works with managers to ensure a safe and compliant work environment

3. All boiler inspections and pressure vessel inspections and licensing

4. Oversee and train staff regarding proper storm water testing and reporting

5. Green Star oversight, training, follow-up and reporting
Maintenance of Required Documentation and Manuals

1. Updating of documents, records and manuals under the direction of the Safety Health & Environmental Director
Human Resource Duties

1. Schedule pre-employment and random drug testing appointments

2. Assist with prospective employee background checks as directed
Other Duties

1. Assist with vehicle registrations and overweight permits as directed by Safety Health & Environmental Director

2. Other duties as requested or as necessary

Desired Qualifications

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE:

1. Trained and certified (where required) in areas of DOT as well as Drug & Alcohol Testing/Training

2. Minimum of 3 years of experience in the areas of Safety & Environmental Management and Industrial Hygiene, and/or a Bachelor's degree in Safety Studies. Prefer specific training and experience in Safety Administration, knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, SARA III, ADA and Workers comp regulations and OSHA 30 hour General Industry Certification

SKILLS:

1. Proficient in Word, Excel and Power Point (general windows applications)

2. Safety conscious (lead by example)

3. Team player with strong leadership qualities

4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills

5. Strong organizational skills and self-motivation is a must

6. Discretion, as this position requires the handling of confidential information

7. Ability to recognize hazardous situations and recommend corrective measures

8. Ability to stay calm and focused under pressure

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

1. Must have a valid driver's license and driving record within the tolerable insurability limits (Carroll Concrete Company's discretion)

2. Ongoing training as required to remain certified, educated and up-to-date regarding compliance issues

RESTRICTIONS

Must be able to safely access all areas of plant, equipment and around jobsites as necessary. Must be able to sit, drive and stand for extended periods as is necessary to complete the job at hand. Able to lift and carry up to 75# occasionally (as necessary). Must be willing to work varied hours when necessary.

Part of the SHE Specialist's job will be "other" tasks/duties as assigned or as necessary.
