The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Northeast Region is searching for a Service Forester. The incumbent we are looking for is someone who is a proven team player, has experience in forestry, forest health, and fire suppression, and displays an effective form of leadership to deliver program goals to local landowners.

The local work unit is dominated by mixed conifer stands in dire need of treatments to promote forest health, reduce fuel loading, and protect structures from the threat of wildland fire. Thousands of existing homes and properties are falling behind every year as their unmanaged forests continue to grow. This position will help to support private landowners in protecting their forests, their homes, and the surrounding communities. The Service Forester s stewardship recommendations have the real potential to put these properties on a better trajectory to improve the health, resilience, and productivity of their forests.

The Service Forester position reports to the region s Cost Share Program Specialist and requires the ability to foster positive working relationships amongst the other Service Foresters in the county and region, while also interacting with the general public, contractors, fire districts, and other state, local, county and federal agencies on a routine basis. It will require you to exercise your knowledge of forestry, forest health, fire behavior, structural protection, agreement negotiation, and communication skills. By performing these actions effectively, efficiently, and professionally, this position supports the DNR in fulfilling its mission of providing innovative leadership and expertise to ensure environmental protection, community safety, and a rich quality of life for current and future generations.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist non-industrial landowners with the stewardship of their forests by providing educational, technical, and financial resources.
  • Independently conduct site visits with landowners to assess forest health issues and hazardous fuels conditions while determining applicable program eligibility.
  • Implement cost-share projects from unit layout through inspection of completed forest health improvement and fuels reduction treatments.
  • Administer fuels reduction contracts from project layout through compliance with contractor performance.
  • Assist with forest stewardship outreach events and education workshops.
  • Provide onsite home risk assessments and wildfire hazard mitigation instruction.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in forestry, natural resources, or a closely related field from an accredited program AND 2 years of field experience in forest management in the
pacific Northwest or a similar environment.
OR a combination of education and/or experience equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of silviculture and forest management practices in the Pacific Northwest or similar environments.
  • Experience in general forest management activities such as forest road design and construction, timber management planning, silviculture techniques, reforestation methods, and timber harvest boundaries.
  • Experience using forestry tools such as measuring and hand tools.
  • Experience teaching or providing group presentations.
  • Proficient with computers, Microsoft Office applications, and SharePoint.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Field Maps, and other mapping tools to document work and convey information to non-technical audiences.
  • Working independently.
  • Time Management.
  • Effective oral and written communications and can convey messages clearly and persuasively. Excellent public speaking skills.
