The Southampton Power Station, a 51 MW biomass facility in Franklin, VA, is a beacon of safety and excellence. Opportunity Summary

The Auxiliary Operator assists in the safe and efficient operation of the power plant and the supporting equipment and systems. The Auxiliary Operator operates, inspects and monitors operating components and reports on the plant status.In the event of a failure of the automated fuel feed system, the Auxiliary Operator may be required to operate heavy equipment to maintain proper fuel supplies to the station.

Primary Functions

  • Assist in start-up, shutdown and normal operations of power plant systems
  • Operate major auxiliary apparatus such as air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler feedwater treatment system, wastewater systems, generator cooling system, boiler feedwater and condensate systems, fuel feed and ash systems, FGD and baghouse systems, SNCR system and all locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment
  • Perform operating tests and inspections, make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment assigned to achieve proper operating conditions
  • Execute orders from the Control Room Operator at isolated panels for clearing equipment or making it ready for service in accordance with operating instructions and procedures; clear, lock, tag, test and safety tape these operations
  • Perform routine water chemistry analysis and operate Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) equipment
  • Maintain logs as assigned
  • Report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of the work and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions
  • Assist maintenance personnel during maintenance periods
  • Operate heavy equipment to maintain fuel supply to the station in the event of a casualty to the Stacker Reclaimer
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by the Control Room Operator, Shift Supervisor, or the O&M Manager

Working Relationships

The Auxiliary Operator reports to the Shift Supervisor (under the guidance of the Operations Manager) and periodically receives work direction from the Control Room Operator.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, hearing protection, Fire Retardant clothing, steel toe safety shoes, gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.).Work with hazardous materials may be required.

Work Schedule

This position works 12 hour rotating shifts with 4 days on then 4 days off with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Fitness For Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program.This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Compensation

The initial hourly rate of pay is $27.00 - $31.00.

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school
  • Prior experience in power plant operations is preferred.
  • Experience in water chemistry control, analysis of water conditions, water treatment facility operations and chemical handling requirements is required
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable.
  • Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls desirable
  • Extensive working knowledge of power plant industry desirable
  • Valid driver's license required
