Job Summary

The Work Study Student Assistant will support the Botanic Garden as a Landscaping Assistant on the Statesboro Campus beginning Summer 2024. The Landscaping Assistant will work as part of a student team to assist with maintaining the Garden and use other valuable horticultural and landscaping skills. This position works outdoors in varying weather conditions while performing tasks that are physically demanding.

Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.

Responsibilities

* Completes daily tasks such as planting, weeding, and watering various plant collections.

* Performs physical duties such as maneuvering heavy hoses, carrying plants, and working low to the ground to weed.

* Uses equipment such as rakes, shovels, weed eaters, blowers, and other hand tools.

* Maintains and plants gardens by:

* Building structures.

* Installing irrigation systems.

* Pruning trees.

* Maintains a nursery and greenhouse.

* Assists with major plant sales.

* Serves as onsite staff during the rental of the Garden for weddings, receptions, and other special events.

Shift Specifics

* Up to 20 hours per week.

* Flexible with class school schedule for availability.

* Shifts available between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM.

* Some scheduled evening and weekend work required.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

* Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.

Other Required Qualifications

* Must be Federal Work eligible.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience

* Prior experience with the outdoors, landscaping, basic construction, and/or gardening.

* Experience with light machinery, small engines, string trimmers, and heavy equipment.

Proposed Salary

$10.00 per hour

This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.
