Director of Religious Education and Social Outreach

Job Summary

This is a part-time position located at St. Raymond of Penafort Catholic Church in the Mt. Airy Section of Philadelphia. The incumbent will report directly to the Pastor and will coordinate faith formation, religious education, social outreach, and other related activities necessary to maintain and increase vibrancy, religious development, and social services in accordance with the mission of the parish.

As a member of the Parish staff, the person must work collaboratively with other staff members to foster and maintain an effective work environment where worship, prayer, hospitality, and service are the primary motivators.

Job Duties

  • Formation and implementation of Parish Religious Education Program goals:
    • Preparation and coordination of Religious Education and Sacramental Preparation activities for St. Raymond School students, students who do not attend Catholic School, and for other candidates preparing for entry into the Catholic faith.
    • Ensure that the Religious Education program's schedule of classes and activities are recorded on the Parish calendar.
    • Support Parish adult faith formation programs.
  • Implementation of Archdiocesan policies and procedures in accordance with the Office of Catechetical Formation, and in conjunction with attendance and participation in Archdiocesan sponsored trainings, special events and retreats.
  • Support and coordination of Catechist learning opportunities, e.g.: the Catechetical Convocation.
  • Review of Safe Environment requirement policies and procedures, and assist (where needed) with volunteer's compliance of clearances and training by the Office of Child and Youth Protection.
  • Coordination of the Parish Sacramental Preparation program for First Holy Communion and Confirmation.
  • Coordination of the Liturgy for First Penance, First Holy Communion and Confirmation with the Pastor and Music Director.
  • Coordination with the Pastor, Parish Staff, School Leaders, and members of the community to identify and address the social needs {hunger, housing, financial, unemployment, mental and physical health, elderly care} of the community.
  • Development and coordination of visits to those who are physically unable to attend Mass. Ensure that all Parish members have access to Holy Communion.
  • Coordination with the Pastor for administering Sacraments to the homebound.
  • Facilitation of monthly Mass/Communion Service at nursing homes, by assisting the Pastor or Deacon.
  • Facilitation of Communion Service and assist visiting priests in the absence of the Pastor.
  • Coordination with the Pastor to include setting goals and oversight of the Caring for Friends Ministry {volunteer parishioners cook, package and transport meals}, the Grieving/Bereavement Ministry, and Parish Thanksgiving and Christmas events that support social services.
  • Coordination and recruitment of volunteers for outreach programs and events.
  • Coordination of the Parish relationship with the St. Martin de Porres Foundation and provide the necessary guidance and information to the Pastor and the Business Manager related to annual grant and quarterly reimbursements.
  • Participate in and provide input to the financial budget after collaboration with the Pastor.
  • Assist with answering the phone and the Rectory door, as needed.
  • Other duties as determined by the Pastor.


Job Requirements
  • A currently practicing member of the Catholic faith, who is in full support of the Catholic Church's vision and core teachings and is willing to attend further religious training.
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Religious Education, or Theology. Extensive experience in faith formation might also be considered.
  • A "self-starter" who loves people, has good interpersonal skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, strong time management skills, the ability to multi-task, an energetic attitude, and a positive outlook when relating to and interacting with people at all levels.
  • Proficiency in WORD, EXCEL, GOOGLE product suites and E-Mail applications.
  • Familiarity with social media applications.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Function as the liaison to community groups and others who seek to partner with St. Raymond Church to provide services to the needy.
  • Experience in arranging, leading, and participating in meetings.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently, both with teams and independently.
  • Excellent organizational skills, adherence to deadlines, attention to details and follow-through.
  • Ability to commit to the required St. Raymond Confidentiality obligations related to Church records and staff.
  • Experience in recruiting volunteers to assist with various outreach activities.
