The intent of this job posting is to establish an eligibility list which may be used to fill current and future, permanent and limited-term, vacancies for up to two (2) years. You must clearly demonstrate, on your resume, that you possess the knowledge, skills and experience required in the minimum qualifications listed in this posting. The most qualified candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to the written examination.

Written Exam Details:

  • The examination is tentatively scheduled to be held the week of July 8th.
  • Exams are strictly PASS/FAIL, results will be sent to each applicant approximately two weeks from the exam date.

Purpose

Under general supervision (or at times, more specific direction), performs journey-level welding for construction vehicles and equipment, and for maintenance and repair of other SMUD vehicles and equipment. Performs automotive and related equipment repair and maintenance work.

Nature and Scope

This is a journey-level classification with primary responsibility for performing welding on SMUD vehicles and equipment. An incumbent in this class performs welding on heavy construction equipment, light and heavy trucks, cranes, forklifts, aerial lifts, trailers, and electric vehicles.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work includes but is not limited to the following: (Note: While in general all functions/duties are essential, individual positions within this class may not require all.) This list is not intended to be complete or exhaustive.
  • Repairs cracks and other structural defects in booms, frames, and outriggers.
  • Fabricates, assembles, and installs flatbeds, bumpers, truck bodies, cabinets, trailers, truck mounted cranes, manlifts and other special equipment.
  • Fabricates, from drawings, blueprints, and sketches, various sheet metal items such as cabinets, trays, and covers.
  • Designs, fabricates, installs, and repairs hydraulic and electric systems including associated safety systems. Designs and fabricates tools or specialty items not available through outside sources.
  • Performs auto body repairs, including straightening and filling dents, cracked body panels; repairs locks and latches.
  • Prepares and paints spot repairs on auto bodies and new equipment; performs vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Orders welding materials and supplies.


Requirements

Required Experience Qualifications

At least four (4+) years experience in electric and oxy-acetylene welding in an industrial setting, including experience performing mechanical repair and maintenance work on automotive equipment. Typically the knowledge and skills listed below are attained by a minimum of four (4) years experience in electric and oxy-acetylene welding in an industrial setting, including one (1) year experience performing mechanical repair and maintenance work on automotive equipment OR Completion of the SMUD's four-year Mechanic Welder Apprentice program, or comparable program.

Knowledge Of

All aspects of oxy-acetylene and electric arc welding practices; nondestructive examination procedures to identify cracks and defects; safe welding practices, codes and standards; metallurgy to identify different types and grades of metal and determine proper fabrication or repair procedures; mechanical drawing and layout techniques; proper rigging and lifting procedures for cranes; standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair of gas and diesel engines, vehicle components and assemblies and related equipment.

Skills To

Communicate effectively with vendors to determine proper welding codes and procedures; understand general welding, fabrication and machine shop symbols and procedures; set up and operate oxy-acetylene and electric arc welding equipment; flame cut, weld, solder, and correct distortion using oxy-acetylene torch; safely use all welding equipment; perform vehicle repairs and tune ups; operate shop equipment; perform code quality welding on a variety of materials including all types of carbon, steel, aluminum, cast iron and copper alloys; and understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Required Licenses/Certificates

Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License (CDL) and a satisfactory driving record (not more than two moving violations in the last two years). Must be able to pass SMUD's welder qualification test as required by the SMUD.

On-site Work

This role will be an on-site role that will require being in person at one of SMUD's campuses daily to complete work tasks.
