I. Job Summary

Supervise and conduct operation and maintenance activities at all assigned closed landfills.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned, as required.

  • Possess a solid working knowledge of all site-specific system operation and maintenance requirements including landfill gas management systems and controls, leachate management systems and controls, treatment systems and controls, groundwater and surface water systems as well as other ancillary equipment and other site maintenance requirements.
  • Manage site operation and maintenance activities within assigned site budgets. Notify Operations Manager if activities will cause a variance to annual budgeted amounts.
  • Supervises landfill staff, contractors and consultants and reviews and evaluates work to ensure quality, timeliness and ensures quality control in adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates workflow and assignments toward the achievement of operational goals.
  • Supervises and monitors daily landfill operations, and reviews and controls implementation of safety regulations and company policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates, conducts and implements repairs, maintenance, and inspections of closed landfill systems.
  • Collects weekly and/or monthly readings. Creates and submits records and reports.
  • Oversees personnel needs of the landfill including coaching, training, and evaluating employee performance. Provides input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.

III. Supervisory Responsibilities

The highest level of supervisory skills required in this job is the management of non-supervisory employees. This includes:

  • Direct supervision of (1-2) full-time employees, including operators.
  • Direct supervision of third-party contractors and consultants

IV. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

  • Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D (accredited).
  • Experience: One (1) to three (3) years of previous relevant experience (in addition to education requirement).

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • Preferred: OSHA 1910.120 Hazwoper training and First aid. Not required.

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences or equivalent technical degree and one (1) three (3) years of landfill O&M, Landfill construction or equivalent environmental field experiences is preferred.
  • Equipment operating, health, safety and environmental regulations knowledge, and supervisory experience may be required.
  • Possess written and verbal communication skills and computer skills (e.g., MS office and Power BI familiarity) and ability to learn to utilize other job-related technical software. Including, but not limited to App based technologies to facilitate digital inspections, reporting and data/analytics.
  • Some knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers, SCADA and/or automation and control systems is beneficial.

  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) part of the work day.
  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects less than 30 pounds part of the work day.
  • Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.) part of the work day.
  • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements part of the work day.
  • This position is primarily field based with 75% of work being outdoors on closed landfills and 25% office work.
  • Assigned to multiple facilities in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky for site inspections or meetings, training, or program administration purposes will be necessary 3 to 6 times per quarter, and that travel will require overnight stays.
