PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To repair, calibrate, and maintain medical equipment and instrumentation used in health care delivery. To inspect and install medical and related technical equipment. To assist medical and nursing staff in the operation or use of equipment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Repairs, calibrates, and maintains medical equipment and instrumentation, such as patient monitors, electrocardiographs, defibrillators, anesthesia apparatus used in diagnosis, monitoring, and treating physical ailments or dysfunctions.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections according to manufacturers or departmental procedures.
  • Analyzes electronic equipment for causes of failure and isolates, tests, and replaces defective parts.
  • Uses departmental computer and paper systems to maintain equipment records, and document failures, repairs, and inspections.
  • Identifies potential hazards with medical devices during the course of service activity; works to resolve once identified.
  • Assists in the investigation of incidents involving medical equipment.
  • Evaluates vendor repairs and projects. Deals with manufacturers on repair work and parts needed for equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Instructs medical/nursing staff concerning use and operation of biomedical equipment.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

  • Director of Clinical Engineering and Clinical Engineering Supervisor

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associates degree in electronic technology; technical school, or military specialized training.
  • Five years recent experience in electronics repair and maintenance, at least three of which must be as a BMET.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of electronic theory, technology, and test equipment.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of department policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to analyze electronic and electromechanical equipment.
  • Ability to isolate, test, and replace defective parts.
  • Ability to make operational adjustments to electronic equipment.
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance inspections.
  • Ability to run diagnostic programs and pinpointing certain malfunctions.
  • Ability to maintain professional growth and development.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally.
  • Skill in testing electronic equipment.
  • Skill in manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and color vision.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be available for rotating on-call in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Moving and lifting medium weight biomedical equipment. Considerable walking, kneeling, bending, and reaching to install and repair equipment. Use of various hand tools and equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exposed to a variety of electromechanical hazards. Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens. Well lit, clean repair shop.
