Summary: Provides critical support to the Operations Division by responding to a variety of environmental safety and health concerns. Assists with routine environmental safety and health tasks and supports protocols to reduce the risk of infectious disease, indoor air quality issues, biohazard and chemical exposure, and to advise employees of compliance with current health and safety guidelines.

Accountable to the Director of Safety, Environmental & Risk with general day-to-day supervision from the Manager of Environmental Safety & Stewardship in completing typical and anticipated day-to-day health concerns with routine process remedies. Will be expected to work as part of a crew. Some scenarios may require evening, night, or weekend response.

Essential Duties: The nature and scope may vary based on the actual assigned location or area. The duties below are potential, but not limited to:

  • Implements tasks related to infectious disease control thru chemical disinfection
  • Handles materials that may contain infectious disease or blood borne pathogens,
  • Works in environments where microbial growth may be present
  • Performs limited bacterial growth remediation
  • Use various mechanical devices and manual tools associated with disinfection
  • Identifies and reports building health and safety deficiencies in facilities
  • Performs all work in accordance with established standards, methods and practices
  • Scope may include minor building component removal including chemical waste
  • Periodically cleans air vents as required to reduce microbial growth
  • Supports health inspection improvement process
  • Supports water quality program through water sampling and flushing protocols
  • Conducts limited and minor environmental sampling
  • Supports Summer Mobile Inspection Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Program
  • Periodically replaces discharged/ expired fire extinguishers of various chemical origins
  • Replaces District Automated External Defibrillator (AED) expired battery components
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

Minimum
  • Associate degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, or other Risk Management curriculum
  • Or three years equivalent work experience in one of the above mentioned disciplines and/ or HVAC or fire protection experience

Desirable
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, or other Risk Management curriculum
  • Or five years equivalent work experience in one of the above mentioned disciplines and/ or HVAC experience or fire protection experience

Licensing / Certification Requirements: Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License

Willingness to pursue licenses and/or certifications as part of a professional development plan

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic North Carolina Department of Labor (OSHA) regulations
  • Knowledge of basic Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations
  • Proficient in Microsoft programs including word and excel applications
  • Ability to read and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) documents, operating & maintenance instructions and procedures manuals
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements in a variety of situations. Ability to wear N95 or half-face respiratory protection
  • Knowledge of workplace hazards, appropriate safety techniques and proper lifting procedures
  • Mathematical aptitude to follow chemical usage instructions related to dilution ratios of cleaning products
  • Must have the physical ability and range of motion and safety knowledge required to use a ladder as required
  • Must have the physical ability and range of motion required to unload supplies and equipment
  • Physical ability and range of motion required to conduct the movement & arrangement of furniture & equipment to complete assigned chemical disinfection tasks
  • Working knowledge and physical ability to assist maintenance team with minor repairs related to Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and general health concerns
  • Working knowledge of electrostatic sprayers and disinfection techniques
  • May require second shift work beginning in the afternoon.

Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (25-50 lbs.) Candidate must be able to pass a pre-employment physical which includes successfully completing a pulmonary function test so they can participate in the CMS respiratory protection program. Requires flexibility to work hours when students and staff are not in buildings and buses are clear of students.
