Desktop Technician - TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT JOB DESCRIPTION: The Melrose IT Department operates the network and computers within the Melrose Public School District and the City of Melrose. This position assists staff with technical support of desktop computers, applications, and related technology. Support includes specification, installation, and testing of computer systems and peripherals within established standards and guidelines. Activities require interaction with application software and operating systems to diagnose and resolve unique, non-recurring problems. The position utilizes one-on-one consultancy to end users and teachers. The employee in this position also assists in the maintenance and testing of network servers and associated equipment. The position's responsibilities require independent analyses, communication, and problem-solving. Work is performed with little supervision and requires initiative and judgment. The position is full-time i.e., 260 days (Including summers and seasonal breaks) Work Week: 40 hours/week RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Ensures that issues are resolved in a timely fashion.

* Support end users with all applications and equipment.

* Communicates to technology and district staff as appropriate in a clear and timely manner, including updates on ongoing issues and notification of maintenance windows.

* Repair, maintain or replace broken equipment

* Repair broken and damaged District Chromebooks

* Repair and maintain District printers

* Install software applications, servers, PCs, printers and other peripherals

* Image hard drives for rapid deployment locally and/or over the network

* Troubleshoot and rectify network issues and maintain connectivity among computers and servers in the district including file, e-mail, application, print and directory servers

* Compile documents on how to use hardware or software as well as train end users in the use of applications and peripheral equipment

* Build reports from student and staff information systems applications

* Travel to any of the locations within the City and School District for repair and/or transport of equipment to those locations

* Identify and address technical problems (including installation, repair and system integrity) in computers, printers and other related equipment and consult users accordingly.

* Works with vendor support contacts to resolve technical problems with all systems and software

* Perform backup operations on servers and troubleshoot errors with backups

* Assists in maintaining LAN/WAN records

* Troubleshoot and maintain PBX telephone and VoIP telephone equipment and cabling

* Run and terminate network cabling through LAN/WAN/WLAN locations

* Documents configurations, problem resolutions and procedures fully and clearly.

* Follows established protocols and procedures.

* Maintains confidentiality in regards to data stored, processed, or accessed.

* Stays up-to-date on current and future technologies.

* All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science or related field is preferred.

* Ability to respond to correspondence on the telephone, writing and in e-mail

* Knowledge and experience with a. Windows operating systems b. Google Suite for Education c. Imaging and/or deploying Windows OS, ChromeOS and/or Android devices (preferred)

* Ability to work independently in fast-paced environment while prioritizing projects and tasks.

* A desire to learn new technologies and a willingness to apply problem solving and troubleshooting methodologies.

* Ability to recognize and identify trends and develop solutions to avoid recurring issues.

* Ability to think and plan strategically.

* Ability to interact and communicate with users, other IT staff, and administrators at varying technical competency levels.

Weight must be lifted or force is exerted in the performance of this job such as moving computers, monitors and equipment or running cabling. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements required by this job include close vision, distance, vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employees are required to maintain a safe working environment and take steps to prevent harmful injury to themselves or other co-workers. The employee will occasionally need to access wall and ceiling-mounted equipment such as wireless access points and projectors with the use of a ladder. The employee will occasionally need to access drop ceiling spaces to install and maintain network and other low voltage (non-electrical) cabling. OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

* A valid Driver's License and working automobile

* A state Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) will be performed with the permission of the possible candidate to be hired. The results of the CORI can determine the eligibility of the candidate to work in the City and Schools.

* Successful completion of a fingerprint check
