Overview:

This position has been budgeted for $17.50 per hour and is non-neogiatable.

The San Diego State University Institute for Transformative Education promotes college access and completion for underserved students through excellence and innovation in education. The SDSU Talent Search Program (TS) is an educational opportunity program funded by the U.S. Department of Education to assist middle and high school students in pursuing postsecondary programs of education. The TS program comprises two components: The TS Advising Program, and the TS Tutoring Program. There are a total of 16 staff members funded to implement the TS Program. There are 25 staff members in the Institute for Transformative Education. The Pathways Office is responsible for service-learning tutoring programs, which recruits and trains undergraduate SDSU students who are placed in local underserved schools.



Responsibilities:

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide in-person support to students during their classes at our Lemon Grove partner schools
  • Individual and small group tutoring in the classrooms
  • Be a role model for students
  • Use academic language to encourage students to complete assigned coursework
  • Ask clarifying questions
  • Promote a welcoming environment for students
  • Develop reciprocal positive relationships with the partner teacher, school administration
  • Follow classroom rules and instructions from the assigned partner teacher
  • Tutoring is a supplement to classroom teaching
  • Tutors must follow the lead of the partner teacher
  • Follow all program procedures and school site requirements
  • Attend and actively participate in Monthly All Tutor Meetings
  • Be punctual for all scheduled tutoring sessions
  • Notify the Pathways Office and your assigned teacher if you will be absent or late.
  • Actively engage in the Pathways Homeroom including Modules and discussions
  • Check email and messages daily (respond within 48 hours)
  • Complete and turn in all paperwork by deadlines including time sheets, student data forms, hiring, teacher evaluations, and tutor logs
  • Students will be required to enter hours in SDSURFs WorkForce daily and update Tutor Log on the same day as the shift.
  • Assist with program-specific and outreach events.
  • Service-Learning Tutors enrolled in a course at SDSU complete the service portion of the course with our program to implement the action and reflection required in the service-learning curriculum.

Education & Experience

  • Current enrollment as an undergraduate student at SDSU in good standing

Preferred Qualifications

  • GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Hold a B average in subjects interested in tutoring.
  • Experience working with children at a school site, tutoring program, or enrichment program
  • Experience collaborating with a team

  • Candidate must reside in California or live in a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire.
