Position Objective

THIS IS A PART-TIME INTERMITTENT POSITION WITH NO GUARANTEED SET NUMBER OF HOURS.

The Judicial Security/Bailiffs will be called in to work as needed. The main role is to ensure the public, jury, legal teams, witnesses and defendants proceed through trials and other court proceedings with the required decorum and courtroom security. By enforcing courtroom rules and regulations. Work is performed under limited supervision of the Sergeant.

During trials, bailiffs act as security. They maintain a secure court room and accompany jurors while they are in the judicial center. They prevent jurors, case parties or other people from discussing the trial to prevent bias, jurors must remain impartial. Bailiffs also escort inmates, jurors or witnesses into and out of the court room. At times, the bailiffs will assist in handling evidence or exhibits."

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serves as an officer of the court; acts as a civil processor by serving judge's orders; ensures evidence and court documents at trial are secured; assists judge and court personnel in distributing court documents.
  • Provides security for those under court protection; maintains order and ensures security in Courtrooms; segregates jurors from public, evidence, witnesses, and defendants; controls movement of jurors after selection.
  • Providing security if a jury is sequestered.
  • Relaying messages from jurors to the court and their families.
  • Completing required paperwork and reports.
  • Take attendance of jurors, and notify court staff if a juror is not present or if there are other concerns.
  • Bailiffs escort jurors to and from the jury assembly, deliberation room, and the court room.
  • Provides immediate medical attention to employees and public; notified appropriate agencies for assistance.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned in a professional and effective manner.
  • Provide jurors exhibits, instructions and their verdict forms as directed for deliberation.
  • Maintain communication with court staff regarding the status of juror's attendance, concerns or questions during the trial process.
  • Bailiffs keep track of jurors, including taking attendance, notifying court staff of potential issues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or Equivalent
  • Strong communication and conflict management skills.

  • Public Safety and SecurityKnowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Law and GovernmentKnowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certifications required within six months of hire.

Compensation
The county strives to be a market competitive employer with compensation rates that are externally competitive and internally equitable. Compensation rates are governed by the county pay matrix and applicable labor contract. Information regarding the county pay programs is available in the Human Resource Department.

Paid Time Off (PTO)
PTO benefit accrues at the rate of 21 days per year for the first 3 years for regular full-time staff and is pro-rated for regular part-time staff.

Holidays
The 12 calendar holidays that are observed by Crow Wing County are as follows: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, President's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving Day and Friday following, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
