JOB SUMMARY

** THIS IS A TEMPORARY, FULL-TIME, POSITION THAT MAY BECOME A REGULAR, FULL-TIME, POSITION**

The Building Inspector provides skilled building and fire code inspections, technical plan review services, and annual fire/life safety inspections for new and existing structures. Conducts on-site inspections to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, adopted codes, and other regulations. Exercises technical judgment and discretion based on extensive knowledge of the various ordinances and regulations related to building and fire code enforcement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

This list is ILLUSTRATIVE only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by the incumbent of this class. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs technical review of building and construction plans and performs on-site building inspections for compliance with approved plans, City and other applicable codes and regulations.
  • Inspects buildings at various stages of construction from the start of foundations to final approval;
  • Coordinates and verifies final approval of all other trade and life safety provisions prior to issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy;
  • Serves as a resource to contractors, public, design professionals and others on matters relating to life, safety, and code requirements and construction techniques and practices;
  • Serves as primary point of contact in the field to facilitate, conduct and manage project scope from permit to final approval;
  • Supports applicants and staff in all phases of building permit submittal and processing, from initial application to permit issuance.
  • Documents and maintains files of inspections, violations and corrections, including engineering, special and/or third party inspection reports;
  • Maintains familiarity with currently adopted building codes, City ordinances, and other relevant regulations;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Responds to management's, supervisor's, co-workers' and citizens' questions and comments in a courteous, thorough and timely manner;
  • Performs time management and scheduling functions, meets deadlines;
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all matters;
  • Assists other department and City employees as needed or requested;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.

  • Proficiently operate computers, software programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or similar office software to create documents and other materials, maintain information, and generate reports;
  • Follow verbal and written instructions;

  • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Demonstrate integrity and ingenuity in the performance of assigned tasks and solving problems;

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Three years of related building industry or building inspection experience; or
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.


Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid Driver's License
  • ICC Fire Inspector I Certification*
  • ICC Building Inspector or Building Plans Examiner Certification*
  • ICC Mechanical Inspector or Mechanical Plans Examiner Certification*


*Must obtain at least one current certification from the list above within six (6) months of hire and be able to obtain the other two within two (2) years of hire.
