Job Description

Under the direction of the Port Captain and the direct supervision of the Master Pilot, the Pilot operates a river towboat engaged in the transportation of coal or other commodities on the inland river system. The pilot operates the boat on the after watch and has responsibility for supervising the crew, maintaining the boat in a safe and seaworthy condition, navigating the boat, administration of company policy and adhering to all applicable laws and regulations.

The pilot is responsible for supervising the crew on the afterwatch. The pilot ensures that the boat is maintained in a seaworthy condition and assists in inspecting the towboat and the tow as required. The pilot is required to take corrective action where necessary and record inspection results. The Pilot assists in conducting regularly scheduled fire and emergency drills to ensure all crew members are familiar with the alarms and that all alarms, fire fighting and safety equipment are maintained in proper working order. The pilot must assure compliance with applicable federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations and AEP environmental policies and practices. The pilot must monitor rigging exchanges with other companies to ensure that rigging received is serveable and equal in quantity to rigging traded and coordinate the removal from use and storage of defective rigging for return. Ensures that the deck crew follow proper decking procedures and provides instruction and guidance where needed. The pilot must follow proper procedures for use of radios

Minimum Requirements

The pilot must possess a valid USCG license. When necessary, the pilot must notify the Master Pilot of any damage to the vessel or property and/or any seriously ill or injured crew member. The pilot must provide orientation and training to new employees as directed by the Master Pilot. When requested, the pilot must observe and evaluate new employee's performance and provide written evaluations to the Operations and/or human resources department. The pilot must carry out, within the assigned area of responsibility, the Company's program of Equal Employment Opportunity, including its Affirmative Action obligation.
