Grounds Manager
Job Description:
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's objectives, policies and applicable laws. Oversees, reviews and trains all grounds staff in all capacities. The Grounds Manager reports directly to the Physical Plant Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • roficiency in practicing and managing all aspects of general landscaping including planting, pruning and shearing, mulching, mowing, trimming, blowing, leaf removal, snow removal, watering, policing grounds, trash removal, paver or wall installation, grading and turf renovation, sod installation, fertilizer and pesticide application, weeding, tree removal, landscape design, and irrigation.
  • Proficient computer and record-keeping skills are required.
  • May be asked to assist any other department within the campus community and will be required to perform any other duties as assigned by immediate Supervisor or Director of Physical Plant.
  • Must be willing and able to work independently without supervision with the ability to supervise training of employees, projects, programs and other employees including contractors.
  • Must be able to manage scheduling, budget tracking, implementation of programs and purchases, application processes, employee relations, record keeping and all general management responsibilities including campus computer software and equipment.
  • Must be able to relate professionally to other MSMU department personnel.


Job Requirements: Education, Experience and Skills:
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Knowledge of contract documents and specifications.
  • Project planning skills.
  • Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Knowledge of computer security and audit procedures and requirements.
  • Ability to coordinate and/or supervise independent contractors.
  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, building materials, and emergency maintenance.
  • Ability to coordinate quality assurance programs in area of specialty.
  • Knowledge of emergency and disaster recovery planning.


Education/Experience:
  • 10+ years of experience required.
  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Must register for pesticide and fertilizer licensing and complete provided training along with MD state test to obtain state licensing or have current MD state licensing.
  • All state fees and training will be provided by MSMU.
  • Must complete state required continuing education credits annually to maintain license.
  • Must be able to identify campus plant materials including trees, turf, insects and diseases.


Equipment Operations and Maintenance:

Must be able to proficiently manage and train employees operating and maintaining backpack blowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, riding and walk-behind mowers with attachments, aerators, snow blowers, UTV's along with spraying units, spreaders and plows, Hustlers, skid loaders with attachments and forklifts, tractors and attachments, Backhoes, trucks with snowplows and spreaders along with training other employees on proper operations.

Job Hours:

Typical hours are Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. unless otherwise specified. Salaried positions are based on 40 hours per week, although additional hours may be required for inclement weather events, campus events or campus emergencies.
