General Description

The Forestry Division is now accepting applications for an Arborist II. Under general direction, the Arborist II performs work of moderate to extreme difficulty in pruning, removing, and maintaining of trees for the City.

The ideal candidate will be a skilled Arborist that possesses excellent interpersonal communication and teamwork skills, as well as the ability to work without direct supervision. Applicants must possess the knowledge, skills and ability to perform tree pruning, treatment, maintenance, and removal methods as well as knowledge of tree identification and safety practices. The individual must have the ability to work at heights. This position will work in all outdoor environments.

Hiring Range: $27.36 - $30.58/hour dependent upon qualifications

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (40 hours/week), plus additional hours as required.

Examples of Duties

  1. Maintains and removes trees using rope and saddle and aerial bucket truck.
  2. Performs tree pruning in accordance to ANSI 300 pruning standards to provide a healthy, safe, and aesthetically pleasing urban forest.
  3. Participates in tree planting throughout the City in the rights of way, parks, and at the Forestry division nursery.
  4. Operates and maintains tools and equipment including chainsaws, edged tools, generator, power tools, ropes, safety equipment, etc.
  5. Drives truck and operates equipment including brush chipper, skid steer, winch, wood truck, etc.
  6. Participates in rotation of emergency stand by and responds to emergency tree work in roadways including storm damage.
  7. Performs Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for Emerald Ash Borer, Oak Wilt, Dutch Elm Disease, and Gypsy Moth.
  8. Acts as Crew Leader as needed.
  9. Maintains records.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Four years experience in arboriculture preferred, two of which include rope and saddle tree climbing and working with aerial bucket trucks.
  • Post high school training and completion of either WI Arborist Apprentice, Associate Degree in Urban Forestry, Bachelors of Science in Urban Forestry or a related field.
  • Must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a good driving record or the ability to obtain CDL endorsement within six months.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Good knowledge of tree pruning, treatment and removal methods, techniques and practices; good knowledge of the use and care of tree pruning tools and equipment; knowledge of the types and maintenance of trees common to the area. Good knowledge of safety practices.
  • Considerable skill and ability in working at heights in precarious positions. Skill in the use of ropes, knots, riggings and other tools and equipment necessary to the performance of the job. Proficiency in the operation of aerial bucket truck for tree work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. Ability to work the required hours of the position.
  • Good knowledge of tree planting both bare root and balled/burlap trees.
  • Good knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices for soil and trunk injection methods and insect and disease identification.
  • Good knowledge of tree species and cultivar identification.
  • Ability to assess trees for risk potential.
May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.
