Postal Worker, On-Call


Job Details

Primary Function:

Pick up, sort, post, and distribute all U.S. and campus mail to faculty, staff, and students.

Position Appointment Details:

* Hourly position

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

* Typical duties of a postal clerk:

* Sell stamps, postcards, and envelopes for domestic and international mail. Balance cash drawer.

* Distribute all U.S. and campus mail to faculty, staff, and students through SPO boxes including certified, insured, registered, and overnight express mail.

* Receive and distribute UPS and FedEx packages for Students, Faculty, and Staff.

* Sell UPS and FedEx postage to the community, Faculty and Staff and Students

* Balance UPS drawer daily and help the coordinator balance UPS and FedEx monthly departmental charges

* Log in and out all packages coming into the SPO (USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL)

* Prepare deposits and order supplies for USPS, UPS, and FedEx.

* Operate stamp meter, purchase postage for the meter and balance meter drawer daily.

* Forward mail daily. Complete address correction cards.

* Prepare mailboxes for each new semester.

* Prepare and distribute lockbox combination cards and keys.

* Order stamps and supplies monthly for office; requisition stamp stock weekly for cash drawers.

* Contribute to the University's commitment to the Sustainability Master Plan

* Perform all other duties of the postal carrier as required.

* Support customer service window with friendly and effective interactions, including accurately handling cash and other forms of tender as necessary.

* Run department route if needed

* Typical duties of the postal carrier:

* Pick up mail from the University mailroom and deliver to the U.S. Post Office.

* Retrieve mail from eight drop boxes across campus and from the U.S. Post Office and deliver to the University Post Office for processing.

* Sort incoming mail at the University Post Office and post to boxes.

* Post mail to satellite boxes at the School of Theology and maintain satellite boxes (handling customer inquiries & complaints, placing labels & signs as needed, assigning boxes).

* Perform all other duties of postal clerk as required.

Judgment Required:

Prescribed, established procedures are primarily used to perform the essential functions of this position.

Machines & Equipment Used:

Postal scales, meter machine, calculator, computer, sorting station, postal van

Budgetary Responsibility: None.

Personal Interaction/Communication:

* Student Contact: daily; serving customers, handling complaints, answering postal inquiries

* Internal: daily; serving customers, handling complaints, answering postal inquiries

* External: daily; serving customers, handling complaints, answering postal inquiries

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience:

1 year experience serving the public in a customer service environment

Job-Related Skills:

Requires familiarity with typing and the use of a calculator Requires excellent math skills

Licenses & Certifications:

Tennessee Driver's license is requiredWorking Environment:

University post office and various SPO boxes across campus

Physical Requirements:

* Must be able to stand for extended periods of time,

* Must be able to walk for extended periods of time,

* Must be able to push and/or pull objects,

* Must be able to use hands for repetitive tasks,

* Must be able to lift between 21-50 pounds (Medium work),

* Must be able to carry between 21-50 pounds (Medium work)
