Situated on the west bank of the Hudson River in West Haverstraw, NY, the Bowline Point Generation Station comprises two dual-fuel natural gas and oil-fired boilers, along with two GE steam turbine units, providing a combined capacity of 1169 megawatts. The plant has been a significant source of electricity for the region and has undergone upgrades to meet environmental regulations, ensuring its continued role in maintaining grid stability.

Opportunity Summary

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician is responsible for performing all tasks associated with the operation of the plant, under general supervision. In this role, you will ensure the safe operation of boilers, fans, pumps, turbine generators, and switchgear. Your duties include safely operating, monitoring, and controlling plant conditions and equipment, conducting power plant chemistry tasks, and applying basic mechanical and maintenance skills. Additionally, you will play a key role in emergency response and confined space rescue activities, while assisting other departments as required. You will also perform various mechanical tasks, such as using hand and power tools, equipment maintenance, and repairs.

Primary Functions

  • Safely operate and maintain boilers and associated systems, fans, pumps, turbine generators, and switchgear.
  • Monitor and control plant conditions and equipment by regularly checking pressures, flows, valves, temperatures, and various equipment readings.
  • Handle fuel and ensure its proper utilization throughout the plant.
  • Perform tasks related to power plant chemistry, wastewater, and chemistry work, including water, steam, oil, fuel, environmental, and performance testing.
  • Conduct condensate makeup processing and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper boiler chemistry and water conditioning.
  • Follow Bowline's Conduct of Operations and procedures while performing basic operating watch station duties.
  • Apply basic mechanical and maintenance skills as assigned to maintain and repair equipment.
  • Execute Lock-out tag-out procedures as required for safety.
  • Participate in emergency response activities and confined space rescue team duties.
  • Assist other departments as assigned to support plant operations.
  • Perform administrative functions to support the work management process, including submitting personal timekeeping, materials support, and incident reports.
  • Operate company vehicles and equipment and carry out housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • Perform mechanical tasks such as changing and cleaning filters, rigging, painting, adjusting valve packing, packing valves (2" or less), changing gaskets (2" or less), repairing tubing, cleaning/plugging condenser/cooler boxes and tubes, sootblower extraction, minor repairs, lubrication, and assist other classifications as needed.
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned.

Working Relationships

The O&M Technician reports to the Operations Shift Supervisor and may give direction to other hourly personnel on matters pertaining to plant operations and maintenance.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Industrial plant environment. Physical requirements include the ability to reach, climb, walk, and stoop throughout the workday, as well as the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position offers a 12-hour rotating modified Dupont schedule. Position may also require extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

The initial compensation will start at $43.58 per hour.

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.
  • Qualification Program Completion: Successful completion of the qualification program for Operations & Maintenance Technician 1 is required.
  • Operations and Maintenance Experience: Prior experience in a power plant environment and familiarity with operations and maintenance of boilers, associated systems, fans, pumps, turbine generators, and switchgear is highly desirable and will be considered an advantage for this position.
  • Safety Awareness: Must be safety-conscious and adhere to safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Mechanical Skills: Proficiency in using hand tools and power hand tools for equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Boiler Chemistry Knowledge: Understanding of boiler chemistry, including the ability to perform adjustments and chemical treatments to maintain proper boiler and water conditioning.
  • Emergency Response: Willingness to participate in emergency response activities and confined space rescue team duties as needed.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to perform a variety of tasks, including housekeeping duties and assisting in other classifications as required to support plant operations.
  • Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and the ability to work as an effective team member.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License at all times.
