Job Summary
Serving as part of the Public Services team, the position's role is to provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors as they navigate the library's services and resources. This position reports to Circulation Supervisors. Students are employed fall and spring semesters and have the opportunity to work during summer semesters.
Library student employees help staff the Service Desk, perform circulation duties, maintain the collection, and answer questions about the library. We provide ongoing training to ensure that students are successful in this position. Training is done through in-person meetings, weekly reminders, and online tutorials.
Core Duties
- Check in and out materials
- Assist patrons either in person, by chat, or via telephone
- Provide basic research assistance
- Shelve and organize the collection
- Assist with shipping and receiving books through the library network, Summit
- Help open and close the library building
- Assist with library technology issues when the Lab Aide is not available
- Assist in projects and other relevant duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications - Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Be punctual and professional
- Customer service skills or alternate relevant experience working with the public
Preferred Qualifications - Familiarity with library operations or prior use of a library's services
- Aptitude and interest for learning new things
Physical Requirements - Lift and carry up to 15 lbs.
- Maneuver a book cart between bookshelves
- Stoop and crouch, using a step stool as needed
- Able to move between multiple building levels
- Able to sit at computer for extended periods of time
