Space Battery Assembly Technician

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assemble lithium-ion cells into modules and batteries for space flight applications in accordance with technical documentation and build instructions.
  • Assemble a variety of products ranging in volume from unique single piece demonstration units to highly repetitive hundred unit runs
  • Work with engineering to develop and validate robust processes to enable repeatable production
  • Perform rework on assembled components based on written and verbal direction
  • Complete build documentation records, both written and electronic, with a high level of precision and accuracy
  • Perform Quality Assurance functions to include visual inspection, dimensional verification, and document review
  • Perform in-process testing of both electronic assemblies, modules, and batteries
  • Participate in benchtop meeting with team for changeovers and or qualifications of process
  • Attend daily and participate in Team PMR 1 meeting


Working Conditions and Abilities
  • Temperature, humidity, and FOE/FOD controlled area
  • Standing - 75%, Sitting - 25%,
  • Working with computer - 25%
  • Lifting to 50lbs
  • Sight/Color Vision test pass is a must
  • Adherence to health and safety regulations (e.g., constant use of PPE/OSHA requirements)
    • Safety glasses, shoes, and gloves
    • Lab Coat, Hair nets, Beard nets and Face Mask as required
  • Additional PPE is required for high voltage assemblies
  • Ability to accurately read and understand mechanical and electrical assembly drawings as well as, process specifications
  • Excellent ability to focus and perform detailed tasks with perfect quality.

Knowledge Skills
  • Strong mechanical and electrical assembly aptitude
  • Knowledge of DC electrical circuits
  • Experience assembling and routing wire harnesses to include soldering and crimping terminations
  • Skill to operate ultra-sonic welding equipment, various hand-tools, and numerous other manufacturing equipment
  • Experience in assembling printed wiring board assemblies in accordance with aerospace standards, including space addendums.
  • Teamwork and effective communication skills along with interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of diverse equipment/tooling and measurement tools (caliper, micrometer etc.)
  • Excellent decision-making to ensure work is done in a safe and efficient manner
  • Skills of observations, challenges, and successes clearly and concisely work with production manager, engineering, and customer representatives etc.
  • Average or above computer skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 4 years + Mechanical and or Electrical Assembly experience

  • Active or previous certification to perform wiring and soldering to any or all the following:

    • J-STD-001 (with Space Addendum), IPC 610, and IPC 620
    • NASA STD 8739.1 Polymeric
  1. NASA-STD 8739.4 Crimping, interconnecting Cables, Harnesses, and Wiring
  2. NASA-STD 8739.3 Solder
