Position: Director of Residence

Location: Southwestern Academy Boarding School, Los Angeles, California

Job Summary

The Director of Residence is a pivotal leadership role responsible for the overall management and operation of the school's residential life program. This position requires a dynamic, compassionate, and highly organized individual who can foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging living environment for boarding students. The Director of Residence will work closely with students, parents, faculty, and staff to ensure a supportive residential experience that aligns with Southwestern Academy's mission and values.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Oversee the daily operations of the residential program, including dormitory management and student supervision.
  • Lead and mentor residential life staff, including dorm parents, resident advisors, and support staff.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure a safe and supportive living environment.
  • Coordinate and facilitate staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.

Student Support and Development

  • Create and maintain a nurturing and inclusive residential community that promotes student well-being and personal growth.
  • Provide individual support and counseling to students, addressing academic, social, and emotional needs.
  • Develop and implement programs and activities that enhance the residential life experience, including leadership opportunities, social events, and cultural activities.
  • Foster positive relationships with students and act as a role model and mentor.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for residential life matters, maintaining open and effective communication with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to support students' overall development and success.
  • Address and resolve conflicts and disciplinary issues in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Organize and participate in parent meetings, orientations, and school events.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all school policies, state regulations, and accreditation standards related to residential life.
  • Implement and monitor safety protocols, including emergency preparedness plans and procedures.
  • Conduct regular inspections of residential facilities to ensure they meet health and safety standards.
  • Manage the residential life budget, including planning and allocation of resources.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role within a boarding school or residential life program.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to build rapport with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development and best practices in residential life.
  • Crisis management and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in using technology for administrative purposes.
