Dean of Students

Purpose Statement

Under the supervision of the Principal, the Dean of Students serves as an instrumental leader in the planning, coordination, and administration of school activities and programs, including curriculum, instruction, assessment, student conduct and attendance, athletics and extracurricular activities, school plant operations, and the supervision and evaluation of assigned personnel. This position plays a critical role as a data analysis leader.

Essential Functions

Administration:

* Ability to use and implement teacher supervision and positive discipline procedures as a tool to improve instruction.

* Investigates student complaints and grievances

* Investigates, adjudicates, and monitors minor infractions of the school code in the form of progressive discipline such as detentions, classroom referrals, and in-school suspension

* Assists students in establishing high standards of conduct

* Interviews students and witnesses in disciplinary investigations

* Suspends students from school in accordance with Board policy and state law

* Coordinates with outside agencies and organizations

* Compares information or data with other records for verification

* Manages school operations in the absence of Principal and Assistant Principal

* Maintains positive school climate

* Handles attendance issues with students

* Administers discipline to all students

* Communicates and conducts appropriate parent/teacher conferences related to attendance and discipline matters

* Assists the principals in providing leadership with teachers and team leaders

* Administers and implements the student attendance and discipline programs

* Researches, develops and implements programs to improve student attendance and discipline

* Assists staff with behavior management plans for students with chronic discipline problems

* Assists the principal with interviewing and evaluating staff

* Assists the principal with development of School Improvement Plans

* Performs other tasks, duties, and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal

* Driven to attain results; proven experience and effectiveness in improving student achievement in classroom and/or school

Data Analysis

* Analyzes and interprets assessment results and makes recommendations

* Collects, analyzes, and reports data to appropriate stakeholders(e.g., enrollment information, course grades)

* Monitors student achievement formative data

* Familiarity with root cause analysis

* Analyzes data to assist in the development of school improvement plans

* Organizes, manages, and implements all standardized testing within the building

* Creates user-friendly reports to assist school leadership

* Provides teachers and instructional staff with assistance in developing and using assessments to align instruction

* Plans and conducts staff development activities that focus on the use of data and assessment to enhance learning and collaborative instructional planning

* Acts as the school-based lead in the implementation of assessment programs

* Analyzes assessments to assist school leaders in data-driven decision making

* Attends, and leads as appropriate, training sessions and site meetings related to assigned responsibilities

* Adheres to state policies and procedures regarding the reporting of security breaches and/or infractions

* Adheres to all established timelines

* Assures the accurate completion of all testing documents

* Assures the appropriate testing environments are maintained

* Maintains school level records and documents for all statewide testing

* Coordinates with school counselors for administrations of exams

* Performs other data analysis duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Mental Requirements

Learning Development- Level E Knowledge in a recognized professional field or technological discipline sufficient to command various principles, facts, and practical applications. Learning development is obtained by the completion of a college curriculum resulting in a bachelor's degree in a specialized field; advanced mathematics, very advanced language development, proficient understanding of practical systems.

Problem Solving - Level 3 Work situations are of sufficient scope and variety that significant interpretation and evaluation is required to successfully recognize and define problems. Highly technical judgments and/or constructive thinking involved. Alternative solutions must be considered and short-term action plans must be developed and sequenced.

Physical Requirements

Physical Skill - Level A Basic level of learned physical skill is required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.

Physical Effort - Level 1 Minimal physical exertion is required. Most job time is spent sitting with occasional walking. Occasional lifting, guiding, and carrying of lightweight materials or equipment.

Social Requirements

Human Relations Skill- Level C Highly developed verbal skills are required to communicate technical concepts and ideas in individual, group, and large audience situations. Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperation, understanding, trust, and credibility is critical. Skill at influencing the behavior of others is important and may be difficult to achieve.

Scope of Contacts - Level 2 Interpersonal contacts extend to peers in other work groups, or to clients/customers who speak the language, either within or outside the organization. interactions with higher levels of authority beyond immediate supervisor must be conducted on an intermittent basis.

Work Environment

Performance Environment - Level B Work pressure, disturbances of work flow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Changes in the performance environment require occasional upgrading of skills..

Physical Working Conditions - Level 1 Generally good working conditions. Little or no exposure to extremes in noise, temperature, etc. little or no exposure to safety or health hazards.

Experience, Education, and Certifications

Experience: 3 years successful teaching experience required

Education: Master's degree from an accredited educational institution. 24 credits of graduate administrative coursework, including a course in Supervision of Instruction.

Certifications/Clearances: Arizona teaching certificate required. Arizona Standard Professional Principal Certificate. Must possess a valid Arizona DPS Level One IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card while employed.
